A 327 - what horsepower
A friend of mine recently bought a 327. It came out of a street rod a good many years ago. It has the double hump heads. An aftermarket intake.
CAn anyone tell me the horsepower with the numbers.
the stamped numbers a t0314hch and the casting number is 3858180

I can find no HCH engine code suffix but an HC would be a '65 327 with 275HP and a 4-bbl. and a Towanda block obviously.

The "HCH" and "HCR" suffixes were used on some '65-'66 327/275hp 327's in passenger cars; the "H" was on Holley-equipped cars, and the "R" was on Q-Jet cars.

The problem with this question is there is no right answer. Horsepower depends of all the parts working as a unit, and there's no way of telling what the internal parts are, just looking at it. Since it is out of a street rod you can bet something has been changed inside. Two things you can tell is what Frankie said, which gives you a range of 'stock' horsepower engines it was used on, but depending on the internals could go as high as 4-500hp. Cam type, compression ratio, blah, blah. The other thing is the double bump heads, which are the preferred ones, but again they came with different sized valves and other things over the years. Over all you have a good base to start with. That block is called a 'small journal' 327 and is the more desireable of the old ones due to it's slight advantage to rev faster. Hope this helps. K

Needless to say, regardless of base configuration, if this mill came out of a street rod then its probably had more face lifts and augmentations than Pamela Anderson...

Oh Tom! You have got to get out of the garage more!
You ever hear of the series "Bay Watch" with the bikini clad lifeguard ladies ? The quintessential 'jiggle' show!
More than a few adolescent boys from the '80s are suffering diminished vision from 'contemplating' Pamela Anderson too frequently. If you get my meaning.
Have we ever strayed off topic!
