Default Anybody know something about Hicks in Washington DC?

Hi Guys,

Got my shipping report on my 65 today. Well history was known to me as of 1998, so it was a pleasant suprise to see my car was originally delivered to Hicks Chevrolet in DC.

I found that the drag racer Malcolm Durham was working there and that;
R. Robert Hicks, was a regional manager for Chevrolet in an era (pre-World War II) when GM managers were moved around the country. Mr. Hicks lived in Buffalo, New Orleans and Baltimore before settling in Towson. He established a Chevrolet dealership at 5929 Georgia Ave and named it Hicks Chevrolet. The dealership was eventually sold to the Dworkin family in 1965 but Mr. Hicks remained heavily involved in the industry.

Any of you guys know more about this dealer in the '60s!?

Mike

Hicks Chevrolet was a small dealership in upper NW DC on Georgia Ave. I knew a lot of the mechanics and like Malcolm Durham most were hobby drag racers, racing at Capital Raceway Park and Aquasco Dragway. Malcolm later opened his own shop in Bladensburg, Md and raced a Z11 Chevelle during the mid 60s. Hicks was later renamed Curtis Chevrolet after the Dworkin family took over. The dealership was able to survive because they had one of the best service departments in the area. The dealership closed about 10 years ago

My 1967 Corvette was also delivered to Curtis (formerly Hicks) Chevrolet. Zone 14, Dealer 144. I have located and corresponded with the owner Dudley Dworkin. He seems to be a very nice guy, but was unable to provide any details about my car.

What do you want to know about Hicks (Curtis) Chevrolet. Let me know.....I may be able to help.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your info. Off course it would be great if they would have some records on the car...of that there is somebody who remembered my care (she is an original 65 two-tone interior ride).

See: http://www.c2registry.org/index.php?..._id=2&uid=2698

In addition to that; i just did a body-off restoration on her and she is a "show car". My target is to have her as period original as possible, so I am also looking for perhaps some old Hicks decals or dealer brochures, washington DC license plates from that period. Would you have any source for that???

Regards

Mike

Mike:

No decals or memorabilia....sorry.

Suggest doing a GOOGLE search of

1. Hicks Chevrolet Washington DC
2. Curtis Chevrolet Washington DC
3. Dudley Dworkin (owner of Curtis Chevrolet and son of Curtis Dworkin who bought the dealership from Hicks in 1966)

You can also use GOOGLE MAP or GOOGLE EARTH and type in the address 5929 Georgia Avenue N.W. Washington DC 20011. They have aerial view and street view photos of the dealership. If you use the "street view" you can literally walk completely around the block where the dealership is/was and see how the old building looked. I did this and made photo prints. But don't wait too long, as the dealership building is being demolished to make way for new apartment buildings. It is possible, however, that the front of the building may be preserved as a city landmark.

The original Hicks Dealership and building dates back to the late 1940's or early 1950's. It was officially closed in 2007.

I mis-spelled Dudley Dworken's name in my previous post. The correct spelling is DUDLEY DWORKEN.

If you GOOGLE his name, it will bring up some additional info on the dealership.

This dealership was also the selling dealer for one of the twenty 1967 L-88 cars. I believe Dave Walters currently owns the car. Interesting history.

Default Anyone know something about Hicks in Washington DC

My 65 was built July 1, 1965 and delivered to Hicks Chevrolet. I believe this is a picture of the facility before it was replaced with a Walmart.
