1963 Factory A/C???
Evening,
I had a couple people pose a question to me this weekend as to how many 63's were left out there with A/C and how many were verts built with A/C??? I know originally there were something like 278 built total. I have searched a couple times in the past on the C2 registery and I imagine it is a a guessing game.
Anyone have any thoughts?

278 total
50 convertibles.
228 coupes.
There used to be some figures around that there were 279, but I think they are settled on 278 now.
How many left? All 300 of them.

I looked at a red 63 vert with POWERGLIDE back in the early 80s at a local "corvette expert dealer" in Jackson, TN, and he told me that there were only 8 PG/AC verts built in 63.
True or not? I dunno

That is kind of what I was thinking. I know I have one Vette guy who spent about 15 mins with the car at a local show. Without speaking a word he came over with a grin ear to ear and wanted to talk about the same things, A/C and the Powerglide. Thanks a for the input gentlemen..
have a great day!

In the 60's, AC was much more likely to be ordered with other "luxury" options, such as PB, PS, PW and/or auto.
I have a survey of about 450 1963's, that someone compiled around 1980. There are 30 AC cars on the list. Of those 30 AC cars, 6 are covertibles, 4 PG cars, one 4 speed and one does not list the trans. The AC coupes on the list, seem to be pretty evenly split between manual and auto trans. It seems unlikely that if only 8 were built, half of them survived and had been found by 1980.
In the early 60's, I tend to think that most buyers of AC cars, were more interested in comfort, and possibly, were more likely to order a Powerglide, too.
This is just an observation, but from what I've seen over the years, AC just seems to turn up much more often in 63, 64 & 65 Powerglide cars, than manual trans cars. At least when you consider the smaller number of Powerglides verse manual trans cars built.

Tom Christman has a list of at least 26 1963 Factory air convertibles . Most are actually 4 speed. From owning few air cars and looking who owned them , women or husbends who bought the air car for the wives ordered it with a Powerglide as well. I find the Men at the time opt of 4 speed however I dont know for sure but theres definitly about 26 in his registry.
