Bill,

The changeover to an Appleton/Sweet style rack happened at #039 and both #039 and #040 are known. It's safe to say yours is at least #041.

The changeover point to the 2nd style body happened around #050 but I don't have a specific VIN. I thought I could distinguish 1st/2nd body styles from the profile but I can't be sure. I think you're GS has the 2nd design body, putting it north of ~#050.

There is another detail to check. Look at your headlight covers. Does the fender peak extend an inch or so into the covers (1st body design). Or does the fender peak stop before it reaches the headlight cover (2nd design body).

The graphic listing D&Ds for which I have some information is just that.... a graphic. Those are not intended to be clickable links. Sorry.

Also interesting is the modifications to the wheels wells. 8.5 on the front wheel would be the width, right? (Good catch btw)

Jim:

I'm curious if the light would reflect/refract? off each point exactly the same based on the POV of the picture.
The two items/spots on the bottom of the hood almost look like styrofoam, or some other like substance possibly for dampening the vibration of the hood as the wind/pressure tries to lift the hood.

With only a couple of leather straps holding it down, or hood pins, I would think vibration would be a possible issue.

Is this a possibility?

I love the GS and everything about them.

Default Perfect wheels for a Grand Sport.

Hello:

I still am working on a solution to the low profile tires, but in the mean time I thought I would post a few pictures of the wheels for my GS along with some period correct tires.

I think it's really cool to see them.

I know there are a lot of pictures of the same thing, but I was trying to get correct color combined with enough detail so it is easy to see.

Anyway, this is what I would like to run on my car if for nothing else because I think it would look really cool.

The "Orange" powered coating is actually the correct color for the Gulf Livery, however I don't think it comes off as well as I would have liked, sorry.

What are your thoughts?

Enjoy,

Ty

Jim,

I don't mean to steal Ty's thunder but Coker makes a nice reproduction of the tires. I have a set on my magnesium TT D wheels.

Didn't the original cars use wider "tires" at the rear, compared to the front??

Yes. Coker also offers a 1200-15 tire.

Ty - great wheel and tyre package looks really neat.
Just what any self respecting GS would wear.
I too, am keen to know whereabouts you obtained the wheels?
BTW Are you sure that is the correct Gulf Oil colour?
It looks a bit severe to me

Default Firestone Vintage Tires

How tall are those tires? I'm looking for between 26.5"- 27" tall. Anything shorter just won't fill up the wheel well enough.

Has anyone ever made a replica of the early, non flared wheel GS? That would be a pretty car. It would look nearly identical to a 1964 Corvette with GS accents and a light weight frame. If you have the GS book, you would think they built many of these cars with the way they evolved and were modified.

Traction control would be a must on an "original" replica....

When Phil Schmidt decided to retire he sold all his remaining stock and molds/dies to Vintage Wheels. I think I got one of the last 15'' sets that Phil did. The person to contact at Vintage Wheels is Rusty. They are still making the 17'' variety as that is what Mongoose offers on their kits. I was told that the demand for the 15'' wheels was not there. I have no idea what the minimum number would be to get them to do a run. When Phil did them he offered them in bolt on and knock off. He also offered two offsets for the rear 10'' wide wheels. 4'' and 6''. The fronts were 8'' wide and only had the 4'' offset. One important thing about the PSE wheels is that they just clear and I mean JUST the calipers on a standard C-4 brake. On mine I had to file about .100 off the cooling fins on the caliper for clearance. My Mongoose has the 15'' knock offs and I was considering the 5 spoke Americans as that what the Wintersteen car had on it as I really liked the look of the 5 spokes but I was not sure if they would clear the calipers so I went with the PSE's . I can tell you that wheels and tires and what they look like in a Grand Sport wheelhouse can drive you nuts !!! ---------Ken

They keep two sets of wheels and tires for the #004 car. They have one set of totally correct wheels and tires. These are ones below.

There's another set with current race tires.
