What size fitting do I need to connect the fuel pump to the fuel line on the carb side? thanks

My first dumb question is: what happened to the old one?

I would obviously try to match it up with the old one, but if it got lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, I'd start with matching up your fuel pump threads along with the OD of your line.

Its a straight pipe to inverted flare brass adaptor. Don't recall the pipe size (maybe 3/8?), but the inverted flare fitting is 5/16. Its a standard part most local parts houses should have. You should be able to identify the pipe size by appearance. Should not be more than $2...

Don't be surprised if your fuel pump is not "clocked" correctly, when you try to hook it up...

1/4 by 5/16 I believe. Should be able to get that fitting at any auto parts store,

Engine build project. No "old" one exists.

Got the right fitting. Ones brass and the other is chrome to match the fuel line. I'd think the brass would be better. What do you recommend? Also, how far should I screw the fitting into the fuel pump? Thanks

The chromed brass fitting will work fine; use a light film of TFE pipe dope on the threads and tighten to 80-100 INCH-lbs. (it's a tapered pipe thread).
