Hello,
I have a 1967 corvette convertible and I would love to know if anyone can tell me any way I can find out anything about the car by the vin number. The car is presently a 427, 4 speed car, but I have no idea if it came with that originally. I have owned this car for quite a while now and it's a weekend driver and not an original car, but I would still love to find out about it.
The vin number is: 194677S104759

Thanks in advance for all your help & comments,
Mike

Welcome! I'll leave the experts to give you details but you have come to the right place. The collective skill and knowledge here is second to none!

As a former '67 owner I can tell you that's a great year and IMHO the real fun is in driving it - sounds like you have the same approach to it.

If you want to get on the right side of folks here, I'll give you a hint - WE LOVE PICS!

Welcome aboard. There is a wealth of knowledge here. All the VIN number really tells you is that it is a 67 Corvette convertible assembled in St. Louis and was the 4,759th made. Post the engine number on the front passenger side pad along with the VIN derivative next to it and we can let you know a little more. Also take a pic of the Trim Tag on the cross brace under the glove box and post.

mdfunky7,

Welcome to the Forum. The 67 vin will only tell you that you have a 1967 Corvette convertible that was the 4759th 67 built. It was built Monday, November 28, 1966. If you are lucky, you may find a build sheet on top of the fuel tank.

Post a photo of the trim tag, which is located next to your vin tag.

Also, post the block numbers as defined below:

Welcome to the Nuthouse!

As noted above, the vin won't tell you much. You have to do some detective work. If your car came with a 427, it would have come with a larger front anti-sway bar (put a wrench on the bar, it should be 7/8" for a big block or 15/16' for heavy duty suspension), a rear anti-sway bar and machined caps to hold the u-joints for the half shafts to the differential instead of u bolts. These are the most obvious things and they could have been changed prior to your ownership.

There are other things to look for, but we can't divulge them until you have learned the secret handshake. We need pictures!

No pictures-no secret handshake.

If the body build # has a A in front of it it is not a 427. Only ST Louis built 427 bodies & the build # would have a S in front.

Uhhhh???????? I think this applies to factory sidepipes, not 427 cars - unless I've experienced a brain fart.

I think it's true. AOS had problems getting the stinger stripe painted correctly.

Default Tank Sticker Could be There...

Welcome Mike. 67's came with a tank sticker (build sheet) adhered to the top of the fuel tank. This would be the quickest way for you to get smart about your car. As earlier said, you'd be real lucky if it is still there but it can happen. Mine was there. Open your fuel tank flip lid, and on the left side pull back on the rubber dam. Use a flashlight. If it is there, you should just be able to see a part of the sheet. Of course you have to drop the tank to read it completely. Then you will see how the car was equipped from the factory, zone number, dealer code.

Right you are according to Noland except for a few very early cars. My mistake - guess thats due to always owning 66 cars (and brain fart).
