58 project
Thank you to all for your input. Saving a Corvette from the grave is my goal. Like I said earlier this has been 15 years talking to the owner about buying this car. She really wants to see it on the road again and that is why she has agreed to sell it to me. This car has been sitting in this carport for 40 years. I use to play in this car when I was 10 years old becuase She is a close family friend and we use to visit her from time to time. Her husband who bought the car died at the young age of 41 and she kept it in his memory. I have been told it is worth 5k all the way to 20k. My thought it is worth about 8k-10k due to lack of original engine and trans. It would be a nice dream to buy this car and make new again. I am now 44 yrs old so that means I use to play in this car 34 years ago. It may turn out to be a nice story. What do you guys think it is worth it it's present condition? Thanks again everyone.

OK, maybe something comparible to see what the market really looks like. These are two recent sales on Ebay, not what people are asking, but what people actually paid. Gauge your 58 against these cars (58-60 cars are pretty much the same, market wise) and decide how much better or worse the 58 is.
And check specifically for the VIN tag in the driver's door jam area. If it is missing, it can be a pain to resolve.

Give her a ride in it when it's done, give her updates on it.
Giver her the original price for the car.
I guess you are loaded because cost seems to be no object.
Pick a number between 5-8 if the above options don't work.

Does it have ANY engine or none at all?
My opinion is $8-10K would be reasonable, especially because you have an attachment. You'd probably give a bit more for THIS car than some other one in identical condition. Some would offer less, others might give more.
Are there more parts - in the trunk, in boxes, garage shelves, whatever?

It is worth more than $5K, definitely not $20K. A period correct engine and transmission, with correct suffix codes, is not a hard thing to do. Since Vettes prior to mid 1960 did not have the VIN stamped on them, matching up date codes is pretty easy.
You should really take someone who knows these old Corvettes with you for a good inspection prior to buying the car. There can be lots of unforseen issues that come up later.
There are knowledgable Corvette people all over the country. Most of us do it for nothing, or next to nothing, assuming the travel distance isn't too great.
Where are you, and the car, located (city and state is close enough)?

Awesome you guys. Thanks for the input. I'm sorry to not tell you about parts sitting in the garage. I am home with my sick 3 yr old daughter today and trying to do too many things at once. In the garage there are 2 hoods, another convertible top frame assembly, glove box, extra complete speedo/gauge assembly, a non-original complete 283 engine, muncie 4 spd, 3 spd maunal trans, bell housings, driveshaft, misc parts. The missing items for the car are the front grill, radio and shifter console. There also 2 short blocks that came with this car, but have not looked up their numbers to see what they are from. The short block are in rough shape with lots of rust.

I like it! Nice colors. And it actually looks like the paint just might clean up pretty good.

I'd say go for it.....especially if it has the 58 specific stuff like louvered hood, rear trunk irons etc. With all the extra parts you mentioned it sounds like you can assemble a complete car. A fair price to pay would be around 10k. Be sure to check the frame for rust out and VIN plate on driver door jamb front. Sounds like a cool project. Good luck and I am sure we all can help you with questions you may have. Keep us informed on your progress.

Step one would be give it a good bath, and go from there.

This project has the trunk spears and apparently a couple of hoods, one of which may be correct.

Maybe as high as $12K, because it has some sentimental value to you, assuming the frame, VIN plate, etc. check out OK.
Of course, nothing is stopping you from paying well above market value if you really want the car.
There are plenty of really knowledgable early Corvette people in northern California that would be willing to assist you in checking out the car. They will not try to buy it out from under you. I really suggest you get someone knowledgable to look at the car BEFORE you buy it.
Good luck, looks like a fun project.
