1961 white wall tires
I am looking for a set of new white walls for my 61. Anyone out there that bought some they are really happy with for a decent price? There are a bunch of dealers on the net; however I dont want to go through an expensive learning curve; hope someone can lead me in the right direction.

If you're going for the original type of tire, I like the Firestone brand that Coker carries because the word "Firestone" is in the white wall itself. Your 61 is the last year for the Wide Whites. I'm sure other dealers carry the same tire, but it's nylon. I have Coker Classic radials on my 57 and they ride pretty good. The only thing I don't like about them is the mold lines in the Black side wall.

Gerald,
I don't understand the mold lines on the black side wall? Are they that noticeable? I spoke to Diamondback and they said their Firestone do not have a mold line? I would think Firestone is Firestone, except for the whitwall addition?
Thanks
Rog

Mine were on the car when I bought it. The lines are about 5" apart, 1 1/2" long and less than 1/16" wide. They go all the way around the tire. They're between the Whitewall and the tread. They are noticeable, but not too bad. If I were to replace them though, I would find some that didn't have them but that's just me. A lot of the midyear Gold and Red line tires are the same way now.

Apples and oranges. Coker Classic radials are reproduction tires, made in Mexico in modified old Michelin segmented molds, which is why the mold segment lines show. Diamond Back radials are brand-new high-volume radials made in modern radial tire plants, and they just add the whitewalls (or red, gold, blue, etc.).

John,
It sounds like Michelin is the way do go. So far there are alot of folks recommending Michelin. Hopefully I will only put tires on the 61 once.

I had an old account with DB and just bought a set of Michelin 2.1/2" Wide White Walls. I love them and they ride great!!!!!!
If anyone else needs a set; send me an email and I will get them a better deal than everyone else.
Thanks

You're kidding me. I just ordered a set of Diamond Back II's today. I had been debating for a long time about replacing my old Coker's and I finally bit the bullet today. My typical luck.

I used DB tires also when I put a set on my car about two years ago. Great people to deal with.
I used no more than one once on any of the tires to balance them.

I got 4 new DB's for the '61 at winter NCRS in Florida from a vendor who was packing up to leave....waved $600 cash at him and had them in the pickup truck heading home in 5 minutes...tires were still in the blue wrappers. I wouldn't have Cokers -- I don't care what lettering is embossed on them...

That is a deal. They are usually about $185.00 a pop. You will not see your deal to often; since most michelin without the wide white walls from DG or other companies intially cost close to what you paid.

I couldn't believe the fella took my $600 offer...and even loaded them in the back of the pickup (NO shipping charges). I kept thinking the tires must be seconds or blems or defective or something. Nope - my tire shop mounted and balanced them no problem and I've been driving on them for like 4 months now...

Just looking for 61 Tires and saw your name again and your Station. We have a lot in common. I have a red 61 and a Texaco Station all in my Hangar.

What is the age of the tires. I cannot match from the Michelin charts?
