It looks like the wing nut for the air cleaners on a 1957 2x4 unit.
They had 2 small air cleaners ( about 7+ inch in diameter). That's
what I have on my 61 vette.

I think they used that nut for a bunch of years and configurations. It's the same one to my stock 66 327/300 one, which I still have, with the cleaner.

if the circular part is the size of a dime it is correct for 55 - 57. In 58 - 60 there is a completely different style with solid ears.

The 58-62 wing nut is forged, nut stamped. The wings are solid and the center is cone shaped.

The type of wing nut pictured was used with all carbureted engines from 63-72, except maybe the 65 396. An unplated version of that wing nut, was used on 73-81 engines and the 65 396.

The wing nut was also used with many other Chevrolet engines, in the 60's and 70's, when equipped with a chrome air cleaner lid.

It's a GM one, and as you said, it is thicker. I don't know of any that are currently available from the after market, that are the same thickness.

For someone who has to have a wing nut from the correct material, it would be a good find.

I bought one awhile back and it was too large in diameter to fit into the top of the air cleaner, the ears would scratch the sides. I also bought one from another seller and it was the same. I now have 3 that look just like and none of them fit. I can post a picture of the nut in the air cleaner tonight. I can also measure.
