Default How to set convertible top rivets?

Well I'm to the point where the pollen has subsided here in NC enough where I could take the hardtop off without fear of the interior being saturated with pollen. I have got most of the frame reassembled but need to rivet the third bow back to the frame as it was removed. I have the rivets and just need to know how you guys have set them in the past. Thanks!

Dave, are they just a solid, soft steel rivet?

Scott that is a good question I'm not sure. I got the third bow from Sulley's tops, who BTW I think is where all the vendors get their pieces. He also sent me along the rivets. I missed him today but I will try calling him again tomorrow.

I thought about doing all of them but that seemed like a lot of unnecessary work. Maybe I'm wrong though as I noticed more slop in the assembly once I reassembled it tonight. I'll let you know how I make out..

Tell the parts guy that you want the rivet set tool for a Whiting rollup door. The Whiting door uses tubular rivets to fasten the hinges and cable anchors to the door. The tool fits in the end of an air gun . I do not have the part number. If they cannot help you , two things I can do for you is on Monday I can give you the phone # of where I get my stuff and or get you the part number for the tool . The tool cost is about $35.00 . If Stone is unable to help you, there must be a trailer repair shop in your area that 1 can set the rivets for you or loan you the tool or try to see if there is another trailer parts supplier in your area , that tool shouldn't be to hard to trace down Wes

Dave, I should mention that the rivet sets are sold by shank hole ID, make sure you get the correct one. I have ordered from these guys before.

That would be the correct type Dave. Do you have a spare rivet to practice on or just going to go for it.

Spare rivet.. blahaa.. what would be the fun in that? I'm an all or nothing type of guy!

If I screw it up I'll call Jerry Sullivan and ask if he'll send me a couple more though.. It will just take a week to get them.

Has anyone seen this type of rivet available from any of the usual vendors?

Glad to see you found the tool . Where did you find it. No big deal to set the rivets, just have a heavy bucking bar to back the rivet.
Good Luck ,Wes

From calling around to a couple of the places you guys recommended I ended up at CRTS

http://www.crtsinc.com/raleigh.html

They had a few different setting tools so I was able to chose the correct one. I've bucked a few rivets so I hope that my previous method will work okay. I have used a 8lb sledge as my buck before and that's what I plan for these. Maybe tomorrow...

Thanks for the help. I'll post pics when I get it finished up tomorrow.

Dave,
I used that type of rivet when I rebuilt my seat assemblies. I used a couple of different sized punches to get it to peen over. I guess I'll know better the next time now that I know there's a tool for it.
