Default 1965 Vette Coupe Restomod build: Phase 6 – Body Mounted with First Start Video

At the end of Phase 5, I had just complete most of the major body mods to fit the ’65 coupe body to the SRIII frame. The first two pics reflect the frame with the body off as a point of reference. Since then, I have mount the body to the frame, mounted the doors and hood, installed the brake pedal & throttle DBW pedal, 4L60e trans shifter, master cylinder, booster, and brake lines, steering column and linkage, engine wiring harness, stainless steel fuel line with in-tank hi-pressure pump, and custom radiator.

I apologize about not getting detailed pics of my body install. I used my engine hoist with straps connected to the seat belt mounts and body mounts at the front of the door. It made the job so much easier. It took just three of us to mount the body.

The following link is to a short video of my crate LS2 first start. Headers from Street & Performance only, no exhaust system. Stainless Steel MagnaFlow mufflers get installed in the next few weeks.

It’s so close to its first quick drive around the block. One issue that came up in my first start is that I have no signal coming out of my DBW throttle pedal. Not sure if it’s the pedal, module, or harness. I hate tracking down electrical problems.

After exhaust system is installed and throttle pedal issue resolved, I get to finally start on body work. My goal is to have the project completed by late summer.

Very cool! That would be my dream driver, the best of old and new. And hopefully some half decent gas mileage. Well done!

Travis,

Great to see the progress and hear the first start.

We ran into a problem with the FBW as well. Like you, I hate tracking electrical problems. A scan tool should help track down the problem.

We were getting a problem code (P2122) which was "Accelerator Pedal Position sensor 1 circuit low voltage". John from Speartech suggested making sure that the plug at the throttle pedal was connected properly would be the first thing to check but, after removing and reconnecting that several times, that didn't solve our problem. We then traced the continuity from the throttle pedal to the ECU plug and found one wire (dark blue as I recall) in the plug at the ECU which wasn't fully seated. Once that was corrected it worked as it should.

There are two pedal position sensors which are mounted to the throttle pedal to monitor the pedal position. At the ECU plug I believe the dark blue wire was in the C1 plug and pin #29. It's best to run a scan to see what problem code you are experiencing. If it's the same as we were getting you will see it when the ignition is turned on. If it's code P2122 check the connection at the ECU plug to see if that does the trick.

Hope that helps.

Rich

Thanks guys for your comments. Can't wait to get it finished and on the road.

Rich, if I remember correctly, I don't think the scanner even threw a code at the first start. I’ll double check that with the guy who was helping me. It was his scanner. I have another friend who has a C5 (2005 I think) coming over tomorrow and is going to let me hook up my pedal and TAC to his car. Should only take a few minutes but I'll know right away if it's a bad pedal or TAC. I’m trying to look through wiring schematics to see if anything else ties into the DBW throttle signal. Did I mention how much I hate wiring problems…

After hours of troubleshooting, I finally discovered why my DBW throttle pedal wasn't working. Because this is a custom car with a crate engine, I had to buy a custom wiring harness and PCM. Although the vendor I used shipped the correct PCM, unfortunately it was the wrong PCM flash. They flashed it for a truck, not car. That explains why the pedal wasn't working. Although very frustrated at the situation, I was pleasantly surprised with the customer service I received. They’re shipping me out a new PCM with the correct flash in the next day or two. Problem solved... finally.

Travis,

I can imagine number of hours you spent tracking the problem down. Good to hear that you've found it though and that the customer service was responsive in correcting their error.
