Top photo is a real '58 (same as '59 except '59 starts with "J59"), bottom photo is a fake.

The depth of the stamping tended to vary widely. I have seen many original tags that were barely stamped. To clarify John's post, the one on the right is the fake and the one on the left is correct. The right pic is actually higher on the screen, and was the first one that showed on my screen, so I though maybe Mr Hinkley had been drinking early today!

Oh NO, is the same true for an early 1960? My VIN tag looks like the bottom one, i.e. the one embossed from the backside. My car is a November 1959 build and so the VIN is till on the door pillar.
Now what do I do. Is it truely a fake meaning something is meant to deceive, or is it a replacement from some time in the past. The VIN matches my frame stamp and the last few digits are also on the engine pad.

Now that is really strange, when viewed on my computer at work the pics are side by side, but when viewed at home, they are as John describes them, above and below!
The 60 tag should have embossed numbers like the fake tag, but the shape of the tag should be pretty much the same as the 58 tag. Also, I believe all tags after 59 are made of stainless rather then the aluminum used on early cars. The tag also moved to the steering column about December of 59 and was spot welded in place.

Early 1960 tags, which were attached to the door jam area with two screws, were made of aluminum. Changed to stainless steel when they were moved to the steering column. Thin aluminum doesn't weld very well.

I have a picture of an early 1960 tag somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.
The fake 59 tag posted here has the wrong font for "CHEVROLET", and the raised border does not go all the way around the tag.
