help decoding 427 block
I am looking at a 427 block for sale and am hoping for some help decoding the block. The casting number is 3869942 p and the casting date is A226. these number I know make it a 427 - 390 or 425hp block and casting date works out to Jan 22, 1966 witch would work for my car with an assembly date of May 10 1966. the other 2 numbers on the block are T02I8IP and 6114988. i am not sure what these number are for or tell me about the engine. can any one help?
thanks

Presuming it's not a restamp, it's a 427/435 for manual transmission built in Tonawanda on Feb 18th and installed in '66 Corvette serial number 114988.
Nice find. Wonder where the car is to go with it?

It tells you it was built on Feb 18 and is a 425 HP, Manual trans, special high performance from a 66 with serial number which turns out to be
14988.
Looks like Mike and I were typing at the same time!
14988.

Hi guys thanks for the quick replys. Just one question for you. I didn’t think in 66 they stanped the VIN number into the block. Am I wrong about that. Wouldn’t that be a way to conferm if your car was really a big block or the engine type from the factory then? thanks

They definitely stamped the VIN in 66. Does it match the VIN under the glove box. Like was stated before, in this day and age restamps are all over the place but if not a restamp you've got a real 427-425. Take a pic of the pad and post it. A lot can be told from that from guys here as to whether it looks legit or not.

He just has the block. Don't know what happened to the car. The block is listed in the C2 Registry, possibly to let anyone know that the engine is still around if the body and chassis is owned by someone who may be looking for the correct engine for the car.

thanks guys, 66BlkBB you said the block is on the c2 corvette registry? i don’t have the original engine for my car but would love to find it if its out there. Is there a place a guy can go to see if a block that matches my VIN tag is out there for sale?

None that I know of. It is just hit and miss on the original engines for these cars. When they were wrecked beyond repair the engines were usually pulled and installed in other vehicles. Back in 1969 I had a 66 Chevelle SS. I obtained a 427/435 engine (JE block) and put it in my 66. After I sold it, the next guy blew up the engine. So it would really rare if you could locate your original block, heads, etc.

Put your VIN in Google and press enter. You never know what might turn up.
