Default CA Black/Yellow license plate restoration

I have the original plates for my '64 coupe and want to restore them. My intent is to strip the plates, repaint them black and use a wooden roller to paint the raised numbers and letters. Do any of you know what was originally used on the plates as far at the color (semi, flat or gloss black), the yellow shade and whether it was enamel or lacquer? As always, thank you.

Gloss black. I just had mine done by tagdr.com and it was worth every penny. No way I could have done anything close.

They are gloss but not a real high gloss. Here's a pic. of one of the plates for my 65. I was very fortunate that my car came with its original plates in perfect condition. Not a scratch or a dent in either one.

i just did a set for my car. It is is not hard to do. You can get paint to match from paint mart or sherwin williams.

Bead blast
Paint
oven dry
use fine trim line around the large numbers.
Paint letters using a brush and letter.
Then let it dry for a couple of hours.
Take quitips and clean up the edges with mild lacquer thinner.

Works great! Then try to get it cleared.

Unless you change your hobby car frequently or plan to acquire several in the next few years, why not pay a pro to do a perfect job? Should be maybe $100/pair unless the plates are really trashed.

The "Pro's" charge more than $100 EACH. I agree with James, do them yourself. I've done many sets. Just take your time, they're easy.

Great job, that looks brand new.

Makes me want to start working on my old plate.

That's original, never been restored.

Plus, who did the original ones??? Men in white and black striped clothes. You think they were professionals?
