Big block air cleaner
i have a 66 427/425 roadster. the hood rubs on the top of the air cleaner. i have the stock 069 intake manifold and a replacement holley. their is a K&N air filter. i compared it to a Fram and the height is the same. a friend told me that the top lid (chrome piece w/engine size sticker) is different on a corvette than other big blocks (chevelle, nova, camero, impala). sounds funny to me. any ideas?? thanks..:f lag:

I don't know about other Chevys but what does the top of your air cleaner look like? It should have a nice deep indentation for the wing nut. On most aftermarket and replacement units this indentation is not as deep, and may not extend back as far.

Mine does the same thing. I have a Weiand manifold that is a clone to the 425 unit but with oval ports. The air cleaner hits the hood on the passenger side front. Not sure why. Not much I can do about it.

Is this a new problem? What did you change to create the issue?
I can tell you a BB Corvette air cleaner housing is different from any other. The bottom housing extends lower to provide the clearance below the hood and stops this rubbing.

It is the lower part of the air cleaner housing that is the critical one. The Corvette base will droop around the carb considerably. On the Chevelles and big Chevies, they were still not flat, but a lot less dished.

Mine is the low profile unit. The base breather for the PCV system is correct and uses the correct hose. Not sure why mine hits but it does. I put clay on the top of the cleaner and I only have about 1/16" clearance in the area where the cleaner hits. May be just hitting when the engine torques. Or the flex in the frame may allow it to rub when I go over bumps. Not sure on that.

What's the condition of your body mount bushings? If they're pancaked, the body/hood will be sitting lower than designed.

You certainly could be correct. I haven't ever checked the body mounts. They may well be flattened. I'll give them a good look in the near future.

Ken,
Front springs are old but I have a set of overload shocks installed in the front that keeps it up to the right height.
Toddalin,
I don't see anything when I rev the engine with the hood open. It doesn't move enough to allow the air cleaner to hit the hood. So I don't think it is a engine mount. I am thinking more along the lines of collapsed body mounts.
