Default Spark plug wires

Hi...

My 60 Vette has a 327 with the Chevy ram horn exhaust manifolds and a MSD Street Fire HEI distributor... I'm not pleased with the plug wires I purchased from Canadian Tire. They work fine but just don't look right. Some plug wires are a little too long and others are a little too short so getting the wire routing to look ok is a bit of a task...

Can anyone recommend a good set of assembled wires? I don't care much for the universal wires that you must cut to length as I never have any luck with them...

Cheers & many thanks...

Ken

I got mine from Lectric Limited. They were all cut to the proper lengths and come with a key explaining which is which. Nice wires.

Not much help with your question. I've changed wires several time. A victim of fads and the latest shiny wire holders so I've always bought the universal kits and cut them to the exact length I need. Don't give up. Might be worth another try. A crimping tool is a must. Practice makes perfect as they say.

I cut my own wires now from MSD. It's 90 bucks for the kit and 80 bucks for the tool to crimp the wire connectors. While it may sound like a lot I've crimped about 8 sets now for various cars I own / owned.. Then occasionally when changing plugs or something a wire will separate from the connector and with spare connectors I can easily recrimp a poor factory crimp.

My guess is that it's a difficult search. The HEI cap has male connectors that require female connectors on the plug wires. The non-Hei distributors require male connectors on the wires. So finding a ready made set that will clear the rams horns may not happen since rams horns and HEIs are from different eras. You may have to go to universals.

I cut my own to length and used a cheap chrome wire loom set up mounted on top of chrome louvered exhaust manifold covers. It serves the purpose and hides the exhaust manifold and keeps all wires from the excessive heat.

Hi Ken,

Current setup is the passenger side with the ceramic coated chrome Hooker Headers and the yellow 7mm Accel spark plug wires. I put those on about March this year. Chrome headers and chrome side pipes are a bit of a pain. Lots of cleaning and polishing - and ever present danger from burns on your legs if your not careful getting out of the car when the pipes are hot. Might go back to my old ram horns and N-14 side exhaust this next winter. We'll see.

I took a picture of the driver side with the ram horn exhaust manifolds and the 7mm red Accel wires just for comparison and to show that it's pretty easy to cut your own wires to length and crimp them yourself to the exact length you desire. I put the red wires on last August.

Just an visual illustration of custom cut wires on two different exhaust setups.

Hi Roadking96,

Two different setups, two different times trying to make up my mind. See more details in post #9. Current set up is the hooker headers and 7mm yellow Accel wires...on both sides of the engine.

Can anyone recommend a good crimp tool? Also what's the price range for these tools? Are these crimp tools much different then the typical electrical crimping tools?

Thanks kindly

I bought this spark plug wire crimping tool from Advanced Auto Parts for $29.99. Works like a charm. Says "Conduct Tite" on the handle of the one I have.

Good Luck

I also use the MSD wires and cut them to length. The wires I use are 8mm. This is the best way to get the exact length needed. FYI, I run the Street Fire MSD distributor and it is the same set up as original. I can fit it under the ignition shielding.

Thanks kindly for the replies...

The Advanced Auto Parts crimper looks to be a better buy then the MSD one....
