Default 56 air cleaner assembly

what air cleaners will fit a 56 with a single wcfb, on the right manifold? i have a couple of later c1 air cleaners, and one from pontiac ,,, c1's have teh correct size base, but the diameter is too large for teh hood brace location on my 56,,, i think teh proper size a/c is about 10", but i haven't found any,,, so i think they would be pretty expensive... what have you used? or what could be made to work?

i followed the thread about a/c for a 62, using the base from a 68 vette, but the op is using a q jet , i believe,,, i tried teh a/c from my 68, but teh 5" hole is too big, and it would be way too high if i had to use an adapter...

The factory single four barrel cleaner was 11" in diameter. You could use a dual four air cleaner. It's a little too small but it would fit. I bought one of the repro air cleaner that looks similar to the original 11" except it's has five louvers instead of four. You can buy them on Ebay or some speed shops. An original or repro 11" will run between 1500 and 2500 bucks.

yep, thats what i thought,,,
i need a mr gasket, or some aftermarket, drop base a/c that will fit, with the hood closed,,, problem is, there aren't many that fit the small wcfb base carbs any more, and using an adapter, makes it even higher....
i'm going to carlisle tomorrow, so i thought i'd see if i could find an "old school" aftermarket to use,, but i'm not sure what fits under the hood,,,
any other thoughts? i can't believe everyone has an original, or uses teh 2x4's...

I have a 14 inch diameter GTO air cleaner on my single four 56 and it fits fine.

I think height is the issue, not diameter.

There is a guy reproducing them now. They aren't cheap. I saw a 55 on ebay only difference is the little dent for the choke. I think it's the same guy who is repo-ing the air cleaners. bob

Put some clay on the wing nut and shut the hood.
If the under side of the hood mashes the clay the
a/c is to high.

the gto air cleaner is the only air cleaner that will work besides the small 6" air cleaners. at 14" the gto air cleaner will be hitting the stock fuel filter so you will have that to deal with. a stock 55-57 air cleaner is recessed and if you measured the inside of one for a replaceable filter you would find you need a filter that can be no higher than 1 3/4".

i found a new gm 14" air cleaner assembly at carlisle for 5 bucks,,, couldn't pass it up, even had a gm filter...it has a 5" base for a holley or qjet, but it has the recesses i need for teh stock fuel pump, so, with my adapter, and its deep drop, it works well, i gained over an inch of clearance...i put the pontiac a/c top and filter on it...
