DMV call back 3-5 working days
Last week, I recieved a letter in the mail from DMV stating I have to have an official from DMV sign off on my YOM plates. I called and they tell my it will take 3-5 days to call me back. After 3-5 days I did not receive a call from DMV. So I think I better head down the CA DMV wait the usual 1-2 hours to get the window.
I get to the window and ask the person behind the counter if she could check the status of the paperwork. She told me oh this is not going to be easy after searching the VIN. She has to call Sacramento. She calls Sacto and they tell her they will call her back in 3-5 working days! Well, one day off and I get nowhere closer getting the YOM plates for a permnament registration. All of the paperwork was first checked by one of the other offices and signed off.
She looked at me and told me how long do you want a temporary registration sticker. I told her long enough as the weather permits me to drive.

Dang, that sucks. Sorry to hear it is such a pain. I walked right in to the office here in MN, showed the plates, paid my $15 (or whatever it was) and I was off.
I didn't go to the main office though, but went to a smaller one. Maybe that helped??

Yeah, I had to get my other vehicle registered it is 375.00 in California which the other state which we did live was 100.00 a year. Go figure... I guess it all comes down to supply and demand. There is a greater amount of cars in the california therefore CA DMV demands more money!

Boy are they gouging you! For Missouri it's $28.75 for YOM plates registered for a lifetime. All you have to do is send them a picture of the plate or plates so they can verify the letter, number combo is not in use.

Jim, Looks like they are processing your plates which is good. As long as they are clear you should be good to go. I had to go to 2 different DMV'S down here in So Cal. One said they could not do my YOM'S and the other had no problem with it. Took a few months and all is good now. Hang in there!

Its a PITA pretty much anywhere. Florida requires shipping the actual plate (NOT a picture) to Tallahassee and waiting 3-4 weeks. The plate can not be altered, repainted or restored ... but it did only cost about $14...

In Wa., it takes about 5 minutes and $40. Just bring in at least 1 plate. As long as it's in decent condition (readable), you're set. They can be restored, repainted, whatever. A YOM plate also eliminates the requirement for running a front plate and you never have to buy a license for the car ever again.
There's no reason it shouldn't be this easy in every state.

What's a YOM plate
Is a YOM plate a historical plate which you purchase one time and never have to renew it. If it is, here in KY it cost around 70$, one time payment. And talking about plates, I was told that I could run an original vintage plate (in other words a 1962 plate on a 1962 car) as long as I keep the historical plate in the car. It does have to be mounted anywhere outside.

It took me several visits to the DMV and several months for the '54. The first hurdle was convincing them that in 54 the plates used were 1951 plates with the red tin 54 tag on the lower right corner. Then they insisted I was trying to register it with commercial plates. I gave them plates with one number followed by one letter and the rest numbers and that back then it was how they did it on passenger cars (today CA has one number and one letter and the rest numbers for commercial plates). It was 2 DMV's with error after error on their part until they finally got it right. The DMV in Santa Ana was where they finally figured it out.
Be patient. In the end it will be worth it.

Almost all state DMVs are a study in bureaucracy....not only inefficiency but obstinate distrust. When I attempted to get them to research past owners of my '61 (since I knew it had been in Florida early in its life). The clerk ran it past her supervisor who said, "No way, and why would he want to know that?" and stared my way from her back office. The clerk came back and said to me, "The boss says it ain't happening."
I left there with no info and feeling like a stalker...
A courteous, "We can't do that anymore because of our privacy policies, sir" or "Those records have been purged according to our state policy" or something similar would have sufficed.

In Ohio, it was a one time fee of $25 for "Historical" plates. If you wanted to use a YOM (year of model) you needed to bring them in and for a one time fee of $2.50 they took a pic of them and it was now legal to run w/o a front plate. The only requirement was that the historical plates had to be in the car to show upon request.

Shipping the plate to Tallahassee can be a real problem. A friend of mine in Port Orange shipped his "fairly rare" antique FL plate to Tallahassee and never saw it again. In most states all you have to do is send a photocopy of the plate or bring the plate to a DMV office.

I know...I was leery of sending my original '61 plate off...but I had made a package deal and actually picked up two '61 pristine Florida plates at the same time -- so I had a back up if the DMV wienies lost the first one.
