Milano Maroon
I am starting to plan my next project for my car - refinishing the exterior. Car is a '65 coupe and the color is milano maroon (probably didn't need to mention that).
I am leaning towards using BarryK's PPG formula since he went to so much work and I am sure it is probably as near perfect as you can get. Only issue right now, this stuff is running almost $700 per gallon in Deltron, PPG's premium base coat. And I know, that probably isn't that much money when you factor in all the time and effort to get to that point. But still, I would at least like to ask and see what everyone's thoughts are.
Does anyone have any other experiences with matching this color they could tell me about? I would like to find something in Prospray (base) and then use SPI clear. But if I have to try to get a match made and it takes several trys I might as well use the Deltron.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Jeff

Here’s what my painter used on my ’66 Milano Maroon (NCRS top flight). I don’t fully understand the numbers, but I’m sure that any competent painter will. We tried Barry’s formula, but as I recall, it came up too dark. Could have been a mixing error. I’ve seen Barry’s car, and it looks perfect.
DuPont, 16 oz. mix size:
885J Transp Maroon 53.9
886J Opaque Red 92.3
855J Light Red 103.4
805J Jet Black 110.3
810J Fine Aluminum 114.7
150K B/C Balancer 347.5
175K Binder 437.7
If you’re shooting for NCRS judging, the biggest challenge will be to convince your painter that orange peel isn’t something that needs to be rubbed out entirely.
Good luck!

2020 C1 of the Year Finalist - Modified
I'm not painter but from what I remember about the paint codes we used to paint my car the numbers above mean this:
The numbers on the left are the DuPont code numbers of each paint component. The numbers on the right are weighed grams of paint with a running total. So in this case start with 53.9 grams of Trans Maroon. Add 38.4 grams of Opaque Red for a total of 92.3. Add 11.1 grams of Light Red for a total of 103.4. Etc, etc, etc.....until the total of 437.7 grams is reached.

When I acquired my 62, my first plan was to change it to milano maroon, but ended up keeping the original fawn beige which I love now. All car paints have dramatically jumped in price over the last couple of years. Not much you can do about it.:

I struggled with getting a stronger maroon that was close to the original color.
Stock formular is drab.
My painter mixed up several samples. We used the original formular but went with a larger flake size to give the color more pop. In the shade it looks stock. In the sun it pops.

We used PPG. Omni paint a two stage paint. Base clear really helps a metallic finish pop.
PM me your email address and I can send you a scan of the mixture from the paint can and some more photos.
You can get a pint mixed up to test it.
Here is a picture of my car in my driveway shortly after paint. It is #15 in the gallery.

Dupont still supports the original colors, using the original codes. I can tell you that Nassau Blue was a perfect match using Dupont Chroma base/clear on my car.

Robbie,
This was the second restomod that I built. It's still in the area, and the guy who owns it is a very good friend of mine. That picture was taken just up the road from my shop, and that model was better looking in person than in the picture (she was about 6' tall!!). I changed the engine tranny about 2 years ago (LS376/4L60E), and modified the exhaust out the back. It's on an SRIII chassis, with C4 suspension. The license plate said "OUTA GAS". I don't know why that isn't in your photo. The color is Patriot Red, and is a Mitsubichi (sp) color.
To the OP. PPG no longer makes the OMNI line of basecoats. Use Deltron, with 2021 clear. The paint on the 62 in the picture below is almost 10 years old, and looks as good today.(using those products). I paid $575/gal for that basecoat 9 years ago, and that was with my discount. $750/gal is not unusual for "reds" if you stay with a well known name. Don't cheap out on the paint, or you'll be sorry down the road. That includes primers. Good luck.

I just finished my 66 Malino Maroon. Deltron DBU 50706 GM 988. I took photos of the Paint (Can) Reducer and the Clearcoat that I used (brands in the cans) and if you email me I'm happy to send you photos of the car and the paint, reducer and clearcoat with all the brand information. It's very nice. Having said this, I wish Malino Maroon was a "little" darker, but it is what it is. lkoden@yahoo.com (LKODEN@yahoo.com) The first letter is an L, not an I. Larry

Thank you for the advise. So the color of the '62 in the photo is not Milano Maroon?
