My 66 Coupe, built in Jan 66, has the pillar weatherstripping. It was there when I bought the car in the 80s and there wasn't any indication of earlier filling and finishing under it when I restored it - to indicate it was built without it. The bottom of the drip channel was not filled to flare into the pillar fiberglass. It could have been installed when the car was repainted in the mid-70s but I'm doubtful of that - just not 100.00% sure???

Assuming the weatherstrip was deleted from coupes at the start of production in '66 and somewhere along the line, even before the car left the plant, there was evidence of a water leak in the area, what do you think a plant repairman, dealer get ready guy or other person experienced in water leak repairs would do?

You'll see that coupe pillar seal in the Assembly Manual in '63, '64, and '65, but it's not there in '66, and comes back again in '67; that part wasn't in the plant in '66. I'm sure many owners added it later, dealers added it to cure water leak complaints, and some owners added it when the car was re-painted for the same reason.

Yeah, I got that part of it. The other part is, if I was responsible for water test repair and I thought I needed that part, it'd be in the plant either because I ordered some or I'd have scrounged some out of the obsolete materials crib.

I am going to install these hinge pillar seals on my '66 coupe (built in second week of October 1965), that is currently lacking this item. What's the proper hardware for a '66, (given the convertibles had them)? Screws only or screws plus a rivet? If '66's had a rivet, where does the rivet go? In the highest of the three holes?

Or should I leave it out to keep it factory, given this car never sees water?

There's no "proper hardware" for a '66, as they never had the seal; if you want to install it, use the '67 coupe seal (3/16" pop-rivet at the top through the rain gutter, and three screws).

Thanks John. I thought the convertibles had the seal in '66, which is what I meant by "proper" hardware for '66. You have answered my question....pop rivet at the top.

The coupe and convertible seals are different - you want the one for the coupe.

It's shown in your '65 Assembly Manual (section 1-Asm, sheet F15); use the parts shown for the "867" model (convertible).
