Default chrome dash cluster restore

on my 64 the chrome bezel top rings on the instruments overall look 'fine' - not great -and some polishing may get the extra shine on it.

Or...the polishing may rub away what's left from the potentially eroding chrome, and screw it completely.

Any suggestion?

The 64 bezels are chromed as is the rest of the cluster. The main cluster is painted black and the bezels are supposed to be painted with a flat aluminum paint. Only the outside edges of the bezel and raised letters are unpainted and left for the chrome to show. SEM #39143 Trim Black is good to use on the main cluster area and Seymour Dull Aluminum EN71 is good for the bezels for color and luster. Dave

Only the very top edge is visible as chrome. The sides of the cones are painted silver. Pilot Dan

I think what the OP is asking is what to do about old flaking or damaged chrome....

indeed, just wanted to know if anyone could qualify the 'danger' of polishing. It depends on the thickness of the chrome layer too I suppose. I assume this is chrome on metal (and not plastic)?

The plating on the bezels under the paint was very thin on mine but it didn't matter since I repainted them the dull aluminum. Not sure what you'll find on yours. The plating on the rest of the cluster was much heavier than the bezel areas. Dave

Try using some 000 or 0000 steel wool pad and just be careful to only do the very top edge.

If you have a lot of pitting, depending on what look you want, you may need to purchase a new raw cluster.

Well, before I knew they were painted I was cleaning them and the paint came off. I just polished the chrome. There are a few pits but I just left the 'ambiance' where it was and drove the car. Been like that for 15 years now.
