'61 Lower Radiator Hose
Ok - I have all my expansion tank and heater hoses off now along with the upper radiator hose. I not only can barely SEE the lower radiator hose clamp I can't even get my hand or a tool up there to loosen the clamp. WTF ??
Don't even tell me I have to take the shroud(s) off for one lousy clamp -- so what's the secret ?

Yeah, thats what I had to do to get to the clamp. Thats why I am dreading having to reseal the front of my motor with better gasket sealer. I messed up and used silicone. Oil leaks.

The secret is take off the shroud. Top and bottom pieces. Even if you could get the clamp loose, you have no leverage to get the hose off with the shroud in place, and only a little more with no shroud

PS: it could be worse, i had to take off the right upper control arm to pull the shroud, to get the auto trans fluid lines disconnected from the radiator, to remove it, in the '72 Corvette.

Now I remember why I don't run lower shrouds.....
Probably somewhat related to lack of ignition shielding as well.......

Last June I replaced my water pump gaskets and didn't have any problem getting the lower hose off. I just remove the upper first and then twist the hose left and right after removing the lower clamp.
I'm guessing whoever put it on last time had the shroud off and with that situation had the clamps tightened without think of the clamp position for future removal.
In other words if it was installed without the shroud you'll have to take it off that way.
In the nine years I've owned my 62 I've change the water pump two time(actually just leaky gasket) and installed a new DeWitts radiator and never removed the shroud.

Strange but my block drains on both sides are actually petcocks -- just like a radiator drain and not hex bolts. Prob not correct but sure made it easy to drain the block.

Exactly -- the hole is there but the hose clamp put on by whomever did it before was nowhere near accessible. Finally got it off and the new hose and clamp are properly positioned and installed now.

Thanks for you concern I'll see about getting hard line in there soon.
But if you think that's bad, when I bought it it had fish tank type clear hose from the tank sending unit to a hard line on the frame rail.

A guy in front of me kicked up a 'Gator on the freeway a few months ago when i was driving the '72, it got under my front tire and put a big old bend in the heat/road shield behind the front tire where the passenger footwell is. if it had gotten a brake line, it would have ripped it out.
30 pound retread 'gator at 70 MPH can do a lot of damage.

It needs changed...I'm not even certain that plastic filter housing won't cook next to the exhaust over time and just come apart.
Anyway, got the radiator hoses and expansion tank hoses on and will tackle the heater hoses and control valve Wed. Today is devoted to my valentine of 40+ years ! Also nice to see that there was no sludge or discoloration of the old radiator fluid....clean and green after being in there for the 5 years I've had the car and who knows before that...
With the hoses off and the shroud removed the radiator 'rocks' back and forth a 1/2" or so ... is that normal ?
Is the only thing holding it in that funky top center bracket with the hole in it over the radiator ?

When I changed it on the 62 I had a bitch of a time getting it on. I got the water pump end on and couldn't get the rad end to slide on until I trimmed about 3/4 of an inch off the end of it.

There should be a rubber "doughnut" around a pin on the upper support. Remove bracket at the top of the radiator support (two bolts), and you'll see the "pin" on the top of the radator. The grommet fits over the pin and into a cup that is welded to the top bracket.

There should also be two rubber bushing on the bottom of the rad.
You radiator probably needs to be painted anyway, and wouldn't those shrouds look great with a satin black powder coat on them?
