Default '67 Big Block Hood - Real or Repro?

Hello Gents, found this today at the swap meet, is it original or repro?

Looks like the original Nassau Blue under some really bad cracking primer. Has a few little chips but overall very clean. Thoughts?

pics are not clear enough to make a great evaluation, but it looks repop to me, #1 no emblem holes for the 427 emblems, #2 looks like hand laid (and not press molded) fiberglass on the bottom.

I got it for $175. It has aluminum foil stuck to it in spots where the owner let a friend use it as a mold. Fits very well on what will be a restomod driver, let the body work begin!!!

Also picked up a '91 Camaro Z28 WC T5 a while back for the project, can't wait to get started!

If you don't mind me asking how much was the T-5? I'm desiring to install one in my '64 and was just curious about the going rate.

I think it might be original, maybe a GM service part (lack of emblem holes). It's really hard to tell from the pics if the underside is smooth (OE or press molded) or not (hand laid rough surface). That it has only one hood support mount also suggests OE.

Notice, too that the finish surface of the hood perimeter frame (normally smooth in a hand laid hood) looks like the rest of the underside

Is the underside smooth?

I got the T5, shifter (will sell), bellhousing, clutch arm, new clutch pad, clutch plate, hydraulic slave (which I may not use), yoke and drive shaft for $500. It all spins freely and shifted clean. I found it on the Ft. Worth craigslist from a guy that was pulling it out of his '91 Camaro so he could put in a LS1/T56. I'll have it gone through and add the gear for the manual speedo. It's a 1352-196. My rear is a 3.36 so highway mpg will be nice.

The underside is not as smooth as the top surface, of course but not rough at all. The dark grey glass is the same as the sides - just minor texture where the fibers are. The single mount is also why I thought it might be OE. Had heard of the mystical small block cars that got the BB hoods for a week or two - maybe I have one since the 427 holes are not there...

Is there any other way to tell?

the BB hoods on SB cars is a myth that has been beaten to death on this board. and only one true answer comes up. it never happened.

can you get some detail pictures of the back side and of the rivets. over the counter hoods would not have holes drilled in them. but for 175 bucks I would not care. that is a great deal.

Yeah, I was being a bit facetious about the "mystical" hoods . The rivets are there - smooth and un-drilled, I'll try and get a few better close ups of the texture/rivets tomorrow. Any other tell-tale spots that would help?

Just a side note

I bought a '67 427 hood from a Chevy dealer where my father worked in either '68 or '69 and I believe it is a repo because the underside appears to be hand laid.

$500 for all of that? Not too shabby and thanks for sharing.

Though I want to install a T5 in my '64 I have no intentions of doing the hydraulic clutch thing. For me I'm a simple man and simplicity in my od tranny will be the key.

I'm looking forward to seeing more pics from your resto.

The only 67 BB hood sold through GM service parts was of original construction, except, that injection mouled abortion that came some years later. Since they were made later than production, some rivets etc. could have been technically different.

That is a reproduction hood, but at $175 good condition and good fit, its a good deal.

13-52-196 is from an '89 Camaro . . . not a '91. It's a World Class GM unit, the same one that I just installed in my '66. Here the link with all of the #'s:

Compare the finish and appearance to the small block (likely original) hood leaning on the garage wall... If the new hood is OE they should be about the same. A hand laid hood will have significant surface roughness on the underside of the outer skin, but not on the exposed surface of the perimeter reinforcement. If you've been around fiberglass boats, think inside of the hull... Compare rivets too, as others have suggested. I agree that you made a great deal, regardless. Lots of real nice cars running around with hand laid aftermarket panels

You guys are correct, the underside texture is somewhat rougher than the perimeter, best seen in third pic. The "hair" of the fibers comes through the resin just a bit more than the press molded surface. I'll have a couple of broken off bolts to "easy out"/remove and some paint/primer to strip but the quality of the molding is very nice. Should add nicely to the ultimate '67 "look"!!

I have a GM OEM 427 Hood, still in the GM box out in the garage. What photos would anyone like? Al W.

Al, I would love to see how the underside of yours compares to mine, so just similar pictures to what I've posted here, no rush. Big thanks!!
