Default 1960 Bellhousing Question

I have a 1960, but the engine is a 1966 327/300 and the trans is a 1966muncie. I think the bellhousing is the original from the 1960 - it has the black well in the lower portion that bolts on. See picture. My question is, what is the open section towards the front middle on the passenger side? I assume this piece was missing when I bought the car. Can it be purchased seperately? Thanks.

That looks like a 1960 bellhousing but to be sure, check the part number when you remove the tranny. It should be # 3764591. It's a 1 year only item and very expensive when you find them. Unfortunately, Bubba attacked yours with a saw and removed the section where the starter bolts to it. Nothing you can do but look for another one.

Thanks, snake. Really? He did a very good job - the cut is very clean and I couldn't figure out why anyone would do that, so I assumed a detachable part. Oh well.

he probably had a bolt-to-the-block starter that would not fit a bolt-the-starter-to-the-bellhousing bell. i had to knock an ear off my bellhousing when i did that in order for the starter to bolt to the block; the starter nose interferes..

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY DO STILL WALK AMONG US!!!!!!!!!!!

Of all the bell housings on the planet, that one is probably the most valuable! JESUS, what an idiot! Oh well----------------------
The 61-62 bell housing is virtually identical in every way, EXCEPT the hole for the throwout bearing fork is smaller on a 60 housing. Sooooooooooooooooo, if you were to run across a 61-2 housing for a reasonable price (reasonable would be UNDER $200), That would be an excellent substitute, and NO ONE but us would know.

This is the bearing fork hole for a 61-2 housing.

And this is the hole in a 60 housing.
