Default A thought on a v6

First let me say I will not be putting this in my vette,

I keep having the idea of replacing the 327 in the vette with the Chevy LFX v6 out of the camaro. It produces 323 HP which would be a an improvment over the 327/300 hp setup.

I know it goes against all car loving logic to go smaller with less power.

I have to admit as I look at it and figure out all the changes that would need to be made, the thought keeps going through my mind, if I were to do it, why not make the changes for LS engine instead.

Really? They just killed the Nationwide series V6 program 5-6 years ago.

I've driven the 6 cylinder Camaro and it goes OK if you really stand on it. The only problem is the lack of torque across the RPM range. Most of the Corvette motors just make such a broad, effortless amount of torque it's just more fun to drive. Also the sound of a V8 would be tough to lose. The newer LS2, LS3 and LS7 motors would be a terrific transplant if you needed to make a change.

I would love to put an LS in, but to be honest all the changes that end up being made scare the crap out of me.

You can always go old school and put a nice 383 stroker motor in there. Fits right in and no computers/harnesses to deal with. I did that with my 61 and love it. Lots of torque. Feels alot like a big block.

I would think that it would be as much work to install the LFX V6, as it would be to do an LS V8. Actually, the LS is probably easier, as it's been done before. With the V6 swap, your going into uncharted territory.

Don't get me wrong, I find the concept an interesting one. The GM corporate 3.6 ltr V6 is a great engine, and seems to have some great potential.

As far V6's go, the old 4.3 ltr could be a good candidate, for a Corvette swap. The 4.3 was basically a 350, with 2 cylinders cut off. I was on the crew of a Trans-Am series team in the 80's, that raced a 4.3 V6 powered Camaro. There use to be a lot of speed parts available for the 4.3, and building one wasn't much different than putting together a small block.

The 4.3 wouldn't be as high tech as the LFX, but it would be a pretty simple swap.

Where did this come from? I haven't heard anything about NASCAR going V6.

There have been some stories about F1 switching to V6 turbos, for the 2014 season, but not NASCAR.

Might wanna look at this
Bet it gets good mileage, too!

http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=318062

10:1 327
AFR 180 head
Hyd roller cam 218/230@ .050
Weiand stealth manifold
Holley 600

429hp
415lbs torque.
That would move a C1/2 real nice!

Easy one to build.
No conversion, stroking etc needed.
You could do this for well under 5k if you went completely through it with decent stuff.

That's more than I paid for my car. Plus the new trans. And probably most of the gas I've put in it over 3 years.

And the engine was used?

They must have charged $200 an hour for labor.

I like the late 76-80 chevy 400ci..stronger blocks.use mild recessed slugs and a set of newer heads. An aluminun High flow manifold, Holley or Carter. Headers.. a procomp 262 stick w/450-470@50 lift.May use a roller set up if desired..Cost is low...Torque is awsome. I have a double pass cooling system...no heat problems. "A Retired Guys" answer to low budget performance...

???????????

You could have put a ZL1 and a six speed in it for half that price. And it all would pretty much bolt in.

A V6 in your car would certainly make the car handle better than it would with the stock chunk of 1960's cast iron.

I say Go For It!

Find an LS1 out of a wrecked C5. The sound of a V8 would be something I would miss a lot.

Also 33k for an engine swap is more than many can spend. Its more than I bring home in a year.
