Default How To Rivet FI Nut Plate To Fender

I am putting a stock airbox/cleaner on my '61 FI that does not have holes in the fender for the rivets or nut plate.

I have never riveted before. I assume I would drill a hole the size of the rivet, lets say 1/8", and use a pop rivet gun to fasten the rivet to the nut plate. Is this correct? I want to do it right the first time. All advice is appreciated!

Photo below highlights the F.I. air cleaner nut plate; the plate goes on the outboard side of the inner fender, the aluminum body rivet head is on the inboard side and goes through the inner fender and nut plate, and the tail end of the rivet is peened over on the outboard side against the nut plate.

if all you want to do is hold the plate in place, a pop rivet will do.
