Default 1958 spare tire to thick for storage area in trunk

I have a 1958 and my spare tire sits to high in the storage area in the trunk. The wooden board that covers the tire will not fit in place. The rim is 15.5 with 6.70 15 Coker tire. The tire seems to thick to let the board sit in place. The board is raised up about 1 to 11/2 inch to high and will not sit in place to cover the tire. Is my tire to thick from the original spare. Anyone had this problem. Thanks

Yes, this is normal for reproduction tires.

Original stock rim was 15x5. If you have rare optional rims, there is an enlarged cutout for the plywood. As per previous post, repro tires don't allow the board to sit down. Deflating the tire improves the fit, but defeats the purpose for the spare.

If you drive the car any distance and are worried about having a spare with the board sitting flush check out this post : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-a...t-flush-2.html . It suggests using a late model C-10 p/u emergency spare.

Make that a S-10 Blazer or S-15 Jimmy, or perhaps a S-10 pickup. The Blazer and Jimmy temp spares were inside (and covered) and therefore more protected from the elements.

Don't know that a C-10 pickup spare would work.

Here's a tire that actually fits in the compartment.

You can get this tire on Amazon.com and if you have Prime the shipping is free. It was $58.85. The best part is that it fits and you can even put the jack in the correct position. That's because you're using the OEM wheel.
