How is this plate attached using the provided studs?

Heads up or heads down?
My originals are old and broke but it looks like the heads are (were) on top?
Also, (I warned you this would be a dumb question), these are not rivets.. they are simple studs.. Will a regular pop rivet gun work on them?
I have never riveted before :-)

Always have the head of the rivet on the Fiberglass side and pound on the steel side ;-)

Those nut plates are for the rear of the strap. They go on the underside of the car with the nut down so the back of the plate rests flush up against the fiberglass on the underside of the body.
If you're not doing a judged car, you can pop rivet these in place. That's what I did with mine. The rivets essentially just hold the plate in place so the bolt will then go through and they really don't have much stress on them.

Looks like the perfect place for some pop rivets! Thanks Gents.

Also, note that the plates are not reversable. I was not paying attention when I replaced them on my 1960 and turned one of them around the wrong way.
I didn't notice until I had my tank in and trying to get the bolts through the straps and into the plates. I had to remove and re-rivet with the tank in place and that's not real easy.
