Mid Year Coupes and Wind Noise, How is your car on the highway??
I was wondering for those with a mid year Coupe that consider their car done as far as new weatherstriping and final fitment of the doors and decent body lines, what is your experience with wind noise on the highway at speed?? Pilot Dan

the only coupe I ever rode in is my dads 67 SB with side pipes. yes there is wind noise with all the w/s brand new. the car also leaks water. I think the two go hand in hand

Yes - with 2-1/2 inch sideppipes and 4.11 gears wind noise is not a problem.

I don't understand the question. Has there EVER been a Corvette without wind noise and without leaks???????????

Mine has all new weatherstrip. I have undercar exhaust. The wind noise is not that bad. Also, I basicly replaced the windshield frame and rubber. There is very little water leakage. I will get a small drip in a heavy downpour.

There is no reason to put up with a leaker. My 60 had a leak when I bought it but after replacing the cowl vent W/S, it never leaked another drop in the 10 years it was my daily driver before I did a body-off resto. Of the 16 Corvettes I've owned, only one leaked that I couldn't fix. It was a C-3 coupe and that was only a drop or two from the T-Top, on the freeway in a rain storm. Even after replacing the W/S, I couldn't quite get it perfect.

Windows up, is quieter than windows down, obviously.

Got side pipes, but the car is VERY WELL INSULATED and they are not a noise factor. I can play the radio at a relatively low volume and hear the pipes in the background.
Well, not a C1 (oh dang, I meant early one sorry Tom). My 64 Coupe really is pretty quiet which is why I am noticing the little bit of wind noise and no comparison to my 59 rag top, hard top is a bit better.
That's how mine is. Pretty quiet with the windows up till I hit about 65 then some wind /whistling.
I believe the wind noise is coming from the doors. Everything is tight and sealed no obvious gaps but I think at speed 65+ and add to that the 30 MPH wind the other day, that perhaps this is the result of some flexing due to an aggregate of 95MPH of combined wind that was hitting it. Just for the heck of it, I may try and isolate using some blue painters tape around the door gap and see if it changes. Probably not much to be done about it, but I was curious if anyone may have found something in particular that could be easily corrected. Thanks for the replies.

anyone ever tried to fit 'modern' (non-original, as used for kit cars) strips/seals and eventually different routing. They come in a zillion of shapes. I personally prefer to end up with a water and wind proof car, even if rain dripping in seems more 'original'

Do you have a source you'd recommend for the strips/seals you're referring to used in the kit car trade?

my 67 split had NO water or air leaks but we took much more care constructing the cowl than the factory did , yes a mid year coupe can be made leak free.

I buy mine in the UK (I am from Belgium) where the kit car scene is very well developed. . There is plenty, see addresses below

Thanks for the links, quite a lot of nice products there, including weatherstrip!

I've owned my '66 for 44 years and have NEVER had an issue with wind noise in the car at highway speeds with the windows rolled up. I did find that she was a leaker in a very heavy rainstorm around '75 or so, but I've managed to keep her out of those situations in the years since that time. On the highway, once we get through the sidepipe dronezone, she is as quiet as she has ever been (original weather stripping and all).
