Show Me Your Modified Midyear Glovebox
My previous '64 Jaguar E-Type had the tiniest little "storage binnacle" at the right side of the dash. Barely enough room for my insurance verification, AAA card, cell phone (still Lucas Electric equipped) and the requisite pair of snobbish driving gloves. That's the problem with a lot of these sportscars, no room for incidentals. Unless you own a midyear Sting Ray .... That glovebox is enormous, I can hold 3 pair of sunglasses, a couple pair of reading glasses, the always comical driving gloves, every receipt that I've ever garnered to be installed on this car, my AAA and my library card, etc. It's great .... until you open that beautifully polished door ... Then you get to see all that you own on the passenger floor ! I love the space but the design is so bad with so much wasted space. What I'm eventually getting at here is that I have seen many folks use the glovebox for additional electronics, I've seen them compromised for aftermarket a/c systems and blankd off entirely to install an aftermarket radio where only the face is visible. I have thought that it would be pretty simple to convert that large space into several smaller shelves (with an outside lip to prevent spillage) or even several storage compartments with individual doors.
Have you thought of this and more importantly, what have you done about it. I would be thrilled to see your photos of your organizational handiwork.

Ray,
Here's a picture of mine....Very simple with one shelf added....Depth reduced to accomodate the Vintage Air A/C system....Shelf installed with a little tilt inward to hold the "stuff".

Looks great Wolfie, that's an easy and simple way of making that enormous glovebox a lot more functional, I'll use your example as a guide. BTW, not a speck of black on that dash of yours, eh ? It reminds me of the GM Motorama midyears where the glovebox and the instrument panel cluster were body or interior color, it looks great. Now I have seen the same done with woodgrain contact paper ...

Here's mine. Somewhat reduced in depth but chuck full of stuff. You'll notice I strategically placed the owners manual to hold things in place. It works but I really like Wolfmans shelf approach.

My Grand Sport doesn't have much of a glove-box. We were thinking of using some Home Depot wooden slelves and staining them to match the steering wheel........

Hey Ray, when's the coupe coming home anyway? Any pics of the new paint? The only thing I recall about those heavy doors is if you don't have it adjusted perfectly, the damn thing will slam down on your dates knees when you hit the gas pedal hard.
OUCH! :....damn things are heavy!
It would be nice to design in some real cup holders for the lid for beverages too.

My steering wheel is mahogany rather than teak, so it'll be easy to match!
