Default Mill out spokes on 14" steering wheel?

I wonder if it is a easy job to mill out the 3 spokes on the steering wheel on the top to look like the spokes original C2 steering wheel?

For some time now i have wanted a leather wrapped smaller steering wheel but with spokes looking like the original spokes

Do you think that when milling out the spokes will make some weak points on the spokes/steering wheel where they are milled out?

This is the steering wheel i will have milled out the spokes to look like the steering wheel on picture 2

Picture 2. This is how i want the spokes to look like

Depending on the composite/strength of the spokes, there shouldn't be any concern. There are sure to be some metal experts that could chime in, but I wouldn't hesitate to modify your wheel. If you wanted to play it safe, you could start out small and increase as your comfort zone allows.

I suppose it would depend, also, if you are doing this yourself or paying someone to do it.

Bring it over here and we'll do it.

Actually, the hardest part would to be securing the wheel to the table for an accurate cut. It would probably be done as three set-ups with the "spokes" secured in the horizontal plane.

"If" the steel is the same thickness, and "if" it is of the same tensile strength range, then yes, you are weakening the spokes. How much is a guess, and if it is too much you have trashed a wheel.

I would try it on a old damaged wheel to see if too much, before risking a "good" wheel.

I would look at this one first. Maybe cheaper and easier in the long run. You could always sell the old one to help offset cost. Just a thought

sixty4. I have looked at that wheel but i have already bought the wheel on the first picture(i like it better)

I will not machine out very much on the spokes just enough to have a more "C2/original" look

14" is pretty small for a midyear. I would think it may restrict visibility of the gauges. You may want a 15". Use a 69-76 wheel and have it leather covered. Lots of guys on the forum have those. Chuck Pelton here on the forum will help you out.

I agree with Tom. I put on the steering wheel he suggested, and added a wheelskin cover with a rubber cushion underneath. It's really nice.

I recently put on a 14" wheel just to see how it would feel. I couldn't see the gauges very well at all.

Since i already have bought the wheel i will try it that is for sure.

My wheel to the left that i will mill out the spokes so it looks like the steering wheel on the picture to the right(this steering wheel have had the spokes milled out by the owner and forum member here)
I will not mill out the spokes as much as the steering wheel to the right

The steering wheel is really no that small so i think this will look good

It looks like your wheel has an under-lapping center spoke like 67 up wheels have. On original 64 wheels all three spokes are flush. This means you may want to machine the hub or make a spacer to compensate for the center spoke so the wheel fits flat on the hub. I did that for the 69 Camaro wheel on my 65. Here is a pic of the spacer. Not a quality drawing but if you print it and use it for a template it will get you by.

This spacer looks great

I opened the PDF for the spacer and if i had one like that it would me much less work than mill down the hub

Thanks for the file Sky65

How long did it take you to make the spacer?

I don't remember how long it took to make. It wasn't hard. I bought a piece if 1/8" aluminum plate big enough for a couple of spacers in case I messed up. I cut it out by hand with a cheap jig saw. The outside first. Then drilled the holes, including the part that looks like notches. Then cut out the center. The notches are just drilled holes that have been opened up a little with a file after the center cut. It probably took an hour of messing with it but I didn't have the template. I made that from the finished product.
