Default 64 voltage regulator frustration...and questions

So we're nearly ready to install the engine in our '64 and came to realize that we do not have a voltage regulator, nor the wiring for it. Our car was running a '67 327 with '69 camaro heads and lord knows what else when we bought it. I've read in other threads that a late model alternator can be had with an internal regulator and am wondering if our car has had that done, but there are no markings on the alternator so I don't know how to identify it.

Does anyone know of a way to determine if our alternator has an internal regulator? If not, any suggestions for a replacement that does? What we know for sure is that the wiring for the original voltage regulator is long gone.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate but I've always found that if the plug with two wires plugs into the back of the alt. and is parallel to the armature, it uses an external VR. If the two wire plug actually enters from the side and is perpendicular to the armature, it has an internal VR.

About 1/2-2/3 down this page are some alternator recommendations; I have found these folks to give good advice: http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...hreewire.shtml

They also sell an alternator wiring kit for aftermarket applications.

Awesome info guys, thanks!

So looking at the images posted by Fawndeuce, it looks like we might have an SI unit. Our wires are red and brown and plug in from the side:

The regulator is built into your unit.
Very reliable alternator.

Thanks again guys! One last question though; can you tell by the alternator itself or my comment about the wire colors?
