Default 67 chassis dyno runs

I went back to NE Dyno in Worcester, MA (that's "wistah" for you non New Englanders) today and made 5 pulls on their Dynojet chassis dynamometer. The best pull yielded 566 RWHP at 5900 rpm and 563 ft-lb torque at 4100 rpm. All runs were made w/ full exhaust, Sunoco Ultra 94 gasoline and 40 degrees total timing. My peaks from last year were 560 HP and 550 ft-lb. Changes from last year, except as noted below include retard cam 2 degrees (from 5 degrees advanced); Carb Shop emulsion modifications; Richmond Gear 5-speed; Toms BOE 3.08 rear end.

Test conditions and peak results are as follows:

Run 1 552 HP / 548 ft-lb jets 86/86
Run 2 558 HP / 550 ft-lb jets 86/86 reduce main air bleed diameter
Run 3 558 HP / 557 ft-lb jets 88/88
Run 4 566 HP / 563 ft-lb jets 92/92
Run 5 562 HP / 564 ft-lb jets 92/92 w/ pan-evac system

Here's the graph for run 4:

Unfortunately two of my friends originally scheduled to attend couldn't make it so I pulled alone. Its more fun in a group, but was still fun.

If you get a chance to use a chassis dyno I highly recommend it. Its fun, you'll probably gain some performance and certainly learn something about your setup.

Take care,

Mark

NICE RIDE:

miss the big blocks (I was into Olds for a while).
Have you ever did the 1/4 mile with her yet?

Mark,

Now those are some stout numbers! :yesnod: I think it was the shift plate that gained the extra six horsepower from the last dyno test!

That torque curve is so broad and flat you could drive a wagon train across it :D

What bore and stroke are you using to get 540 cubes on a Mark IV block?

Thanks.

What's the lst gear ratio in the 5-speed Richmond? Does it give a deep enough overall ratio with the 3:08 final drive for easy launching?

Love the torque curve!!!!

ARE you going to "OLDIES DAY" At NE dragway ???? Its in a couple of months............Last fall , ran my 1966, 427 with 3.08 rears no headers & L36 cam ,ALM Endlebrock heads , best was 13.7 @ 102 MPH..ON Street tires, 2.6 60 foot times..............no traction 1st gear , wants your CAM ? my winters project is cam change, I am looking for strong Tourque , WOW do you have Tourque....

No doubt the shift plate was a contributor. My shift plate allowed my 350 to reach way above its potential w/o the plate. Those of us with the plate and the accompanying 5 Speed below the floor boards (floor glass that is) deserve the extra horsepower just for jamming the 5 Speed in.

ML 67, Oman, Hotrod 427, Rich Lagasse and who else??? I just noticed that I may be the only SB owner with the 5 Speed. Other "Plate Holders" should identify themselves. Only Rich Lagase knows the charter members of this small group.

Let's hear it guys who are the other charter members???

Ist gear is 3.27 to one in the standard Richmond boxes. Rumor has it they supply a 3.04 if you order the box special form Richmond or order a gear set special. I thing ML's has the 3.04 ratio.

My car runs the 3.27 with a 3.36 rear and I can tell ya that 6000 comes up real quick.

Rich, it's obvious that's what did it! Its these fine details that make the difference. :)

I haven't run the 1/4 mile yet, although I will this year. Perhaps at one of the "event" days at NE Dragway, such as Oldies Day.

The 540 is a short deck Bow Tie, with a 4.50 bore and 4.25" stroke. The cam is a Comp Extreme Energy roller I had widened to a 112 LSA and made on a billet core with a press on distributor gear. The specs are:

254 intake / 260 exhaust duration @ .050
.661 intake lift / .669 exhaust lift
112 LSA installed 3 degrees advanced (109 intake centerline)

As Ray said, I have a 3.04 1st gear. Launches are not a problem! Actually this gives me a slightly shorter overall 1st gear compared to my previous 4-speed setup -- 2.20 and 4.11 = 9.04; 3.04 and 3.08 = 9.36.

Ray, you just need to install a big block! You can have it all!

Take care,

Mark

Sounds like you had a good time Mark! Were you hoping for bigger gains from the changes? I'm suprised that the vacuum pump and retarded cam didn't give you a bigger peak power boost (not that you need it at your power level!)

I just ordered a solid flat tappet for my 540 last week (Comp XS290S). I can't wait to get this thing together!

I was hoping for a little more, but I'm happy with it. A bit surprised retarding the cam had such a small effect. What was particularly surprising is both my peak HP and torque peaks moved down compared to last year. However, they also stayed near peak for a wider rpm band.

The pan-evac system was a simple passive system using venturri extraction from the headers -- no vacuum pump.

So when are you going to fire yours up in anger???

Take care,

Mark

Great numbers!!!

You know there are advantages to running huge cubes....

All you have to do is "wing it" a couple of times and the atmospheric pressure drops enough in the next lane to kill his power for a few moments during the launch!!! :-)

You know if we launched all these torque monsters at the same time we could affect the earth's rotation!

You never have to wait on a 540 to "get up on the cam" and there is not much need to downshift!

But if you do it sure is fun!!
