From October 1976, getting ready for the East Alton - Wood River High School homecoming parade.
Much of that parking lot is no longer there as that street is now a highway through there. More unusual is that all those refinery tanks in the background are also gone today. That was the Amoco Oil Refinery and it is reduced to nothing in a tank farm and only a couple of pumping stations and some offices.

Wish I had a picture:
Went with my brother in 1973 to trade in his 1967 Black/Red W30 442 to Jim Hooper VW in Merritt Island, Florida. In the back sat on a trailer a 289 Cobra race car. How much I asked? $1800!

Look at the snow packed into that grill!
I drove them in the cold and snow, but I don't ever remember filling the grill with snow. My old '63 convertible I had long ago had a '66 small block hood that someone cut the usual hole and glued a '67 style scoop over. As such, it was open both front and rear, and having a more level open air cleaner rather than the drooping kind on Corvettes, the air cleaner stuck up and was in the fresh air.
Then came winter.
I was cruising on I-270 approaching Lindbergh in Florissant when it began to stall on me. I coasted to the side, got out to look around, found it had gas, it would start back up. It did it a couple of times. Finally, I left the hood released, my seat belt off, and the wing nut off the air cleaner. I knew something was happening to the fuel, but couldn't find anything as it took too long to get a look. When everything loose, I got it open fast enough to see the inside of the carb white. I had carburetor icing. I probably shouldn't have sealed off the carb heat passages under the intake.
I stuffed some rags into the front and rear of the scoop to block off the cold fresh air and managed to drive on without issue. Once home, I cut some thick foam and wedged it in place of the rags until the weather was warm enough to not need them.

My folks had a black and white 1959 Ford Galaxy 500 like the one in the pic with the corvettes. It's what I drove every day to my my Drivers Education class....
Times were different in small Texas towns back then...drivers licenses were a formality for a lot of farm boys.
