Default Battery Relocation

I've read all of the threads that I could find regarding battery relocation to the trunk area (right rear just behind wheel well). In looking beneath my 62, I can't see any way to access the area from beneath to be able to install any kind of reinforcement to the floor of the trunk in that area or to install bolts. What am I missing?

A battery box for boats to control fumes, contain acid if the battery cracks, and to allow mounting securely.

I have looked at a number of battery relocation kits. I'm wondering if the fiberglass trunk floor should be "sandwiched" between the bottom of any battery relocation kit and a slightly larger aluminum plate on the opposite side of the floor to prevent eventual cracking of the fiberglass. If so, I don't see any way to access the "outside" surface of the trunk floor. Thanks for the response.

I would put any such reinforcement under the battery box to spread the load across a larger area of the fiberglass floor - to minimize flexing.

Thanks for the photo. My question is in regard to how the bottom tray in the picture is attached to the trunk floor. I don't have access to the underside so I'm curious as to what fasteners can be used (can't use a nut & bolt because of no access). Another question is how are your battery cables routed through the trunk floor?

actually, there is access, there is a hole covered by a plate for access to the body mount bolt. set your tray in place then drill the anchor holes in the floor, then take the tray off and reach into the hole to mount a threaded anchor nut/plate/etc to the underside of the floor.

or use what is called a riv-nut, basically a threaded pop rivet.

see the grommeted hole that i ran the #1 welding cable, used for battery cables, through; cables are tied to abandoned brake line on the inside of the frame.

What is the main advantage to relocating the battery to the trunk? Seems like a pain in the butt to do and you loose trunk space to boot.

2 reasons...

the battery is a PIA to get out in the OEM location, and the battery is a double PIA when you have a/c.

If you put the box as far forward as possible, one of the hold down bolts can be made accessible from under the car.

it's raining and i might melt if i crawl under the car to look, but i think 2 or 3 of the holes are accessible from the underside in the location i placed my tray.

mine is where it is because of my windshiels washer fluid tank being mounted on the fenderwell...

btw, here's my bubba disconnect... (with bypass fuse to keep clock running...)

3 reasons: Thats the torque lift side when traction is needed, which is why drag racers prefer that corner.

Bill:

Since my battery is covered, I placed a disconnect on the positive line behind the passenger seat, but then my seat backs fold forward so access is easy.

yeh, once-upon-a-time i had a factory Dodge superstock and they placed a bus battery in the trunk in that position...

i did it just to get the battery out of the way rather than the car getting-out-of-its-own way...

Something to consider is that marine applications use a fan and ventilation considerations in the battery box to "prevent explosions" when a battery is in a closed environment.

thanks for the thought and the concern, but there is plenty of air circulation through the trunk as the deck lid/trunk lid hinges go through large openings in the bulkhead.
