Default Under car exhaust with side exhaust rear panel?

Hey all. Despite having made several mods to my existing sidepipes, I 'm still unhappy with the level of noise next to my ears. That being said, I personally think that no mid year is complete without sidepipes. That leaves me with the intention of doing what a couple others here have done, leave the sidepipe covers in place, weld tips in place, and reinstall the undercar exhaust. My question is, will I be completely choking my car if I leave the sidepipe exhaust panel on the car and "hide " the tailpipes underneath the panel, or am I
going to need to reinstall the undercar exhaust panel and exit the exhaust the way it 's supposed to go?? I 'm thinking ( hoping) that the tailpipe bend required to exit underneath the panel won't be any more severe in terms of restriction than the bends in the sidepipes? Input??
Steve

BTW - 2 1/2" exhaust, and new mufflers or other pricey options are not in my budget right now.

I like the sound of my side pipes, but there are times that I would like to "turn them off". I don't like to wake up the neighbors if I leave early on a Saturday or Sunday morning, so it would be nice to be able to control the sound. I have had thoughts of installing a muffler between the headers and the side pipes, but make it switchable. Using an electric cutout to control the direction of exhaust flow I believe it is possible to direct the flow through the side pipes or through a muffler. When using the muffler the flow would go from the header into the muffler and back into the side pipe. There would be no exhaust system under the car. I have not taken any action on this idea yet, but I think it could be done with a small enough muffler that would sit just behind the side pipe as it attaches to the header. This muffler would have to have the intake and output on the same end. I am wondering if anyone else on the forum has tried this?

I've seen a few here install both side pipes and under car exhaust dual switchable systems. Would be funny to run up to know-it-alls and have them say one of them is fake, and you tell them to stand in the rear and rev it, then stand to the side and rev it. Hope to do this one day myself.

my car had an under car exhaust with turn downs before the rear panel. The car appears to have had side pipes at one time, the exhaust panel was filled in solid, so when they took the sidepipes off they didn't replace the panel and just did a turn down bend out of the muffler. I never had any problem with performance with the car in this configuration...

Mid-year crisis,

Here's my approach, I call it the best of both worlds:

My seat of the pants measurement says there ain't any loss of power due to a slight turn down of the tailpipes :

Enjoy!

Here's a Dyno run with both undercar and side pipes open. Told tech to get out of it @ 6,500 r's...but he saw that it was running lean as the r's climbed so he got out of it @ 5,200...still made 296 horse @ the rear wheels...she's healthy!

Again, Enjoy!

Undercar exhausts let the engine produce more power and torque than side exhausts.

In April I'm going with QTP electric cutouts, an undercar system dropping off to the rear of the half shafts. Looking forward to a bit of quite on long hwy trips and open s/p whenever. Just got my radio redone, maybe I"ll be able to hear if the guy fixed it.

I like to watch the windows shake of the car next to me at the light.
Big block and lumpy cam, is there really such a thing as too loud?

I had the same dilemma. SP to noisy stock system to quiet. I love the look of side pipes. After allot of thought I ended up using both the stock exhaust and side pipes. I used QTP cutouts with stock 2 1/2" pipes/mufflers from Corvette central. Sounds great with the SP just opened a little. The neighbors appreciate it. lol.

OP, if you are going to go side pipes, man up and do the real thing. With good body insulation in the Coupe, cabin noise is even with Stereo sounds. A better set of SIDE PIPES would cure your problem. Pilot Dan

To get my CC stock undercar to exit below the panel I cut an inch or two from the inlet elbow. I also removed the welded on outlet piece and then welded on a 90*. After looking at the SMALL inner baffle of these mufflers, I didn't think the 90* would hurt the performance much. I switch between the two system every couple years for variety.

Another old thread I'm resurrecting because I just got a 66 BB with side pipes and have the same Saturday morning wife/neighbors problem. So SS409 or Jim does the 90 degree turn down from the stock muffler get it low enough to prevent fumes in the cabin? Has it discolored the rear panel any?

Thanks
Steve
