Default 63 Muncie vs. Borg Warner

When in the 63 model year was the 4-speed trans changed from BW to Muncie. Mine was built in Oct. 62 so I am guessing it has the BW. Is one considered to be better than the other.

The switch took place about May 1st, 1963. The majority of 63's, came with the Borg-Warner.

I don't think there's much advantage of one over the other, especially when comparing the 1963 version of each.

I just got my transmission back yesterday from the transmission shop having it freshen up. I asked the guy this same question. He said he has been building 4 speed trans for over 40 years and he said he could not tell any difference one to the other. He said he had put several Muncie parts in my Borg Warner.

Glenn,
I've never heard about (or seen) the tendency for Muncie main shafts to twist like the T-10s. The T-10s however have a notable reputation for that problem. I have a lot of T-10 main shafts that are only good for tent stakes now. Maybe I just haven't paid much attention to Muncie talk, so I don't know if they suffer the same problem?

Verne

PS: The first shipment of Muncies was in early April to the Baltimore assembly plant for passenger cars.

T-10's have a propensity for popping out of 2nd on deceleration when worn, Muncies don't.

Muncies are built a lot stronger than the early Borg Warners.

Thanks for the responses. I am not even sure if the trans in mine is orginal (the motor isn't). Is there a quick way to tell them apart?

My 62 has had that popping out of 2nd problem for years. I've learned to live with it because it's a random occurrence but I'm also frustrated that the 3 transmission techs who have checked out my BW T10 over the past 15 years have been unable to correct the problem.

Is the numbers on the same location on Muncie transmissions for 64, 65, 66 and 67?

The Muncie case is cast a little differently, but the numbers are pretty much in the same place.

I am no transmission expert but I just picked up my 62 Borg Warner for having it freshened up. I asked what was the best lube. He said "just a good 70/30 and don't use synthetic or it will pop out of second gear" I don't have anything to base this on but it is food for thought

Lube type will have little or no effect on the T-10 popping out of gear. the slider and gear tend to wear on those from rapid (and missed) shifts. usually 2nd gets the worst of it. the use of torque lock sliders ($30.00) will cure that issue in all but the worst cases. torque lock sliders have a small relief machined in the end of the "splines" to hold the gear in place.

They need to go back to school. Simply replace the entire synchro unit plus the gear and your problem is solved. The T 10 was an inferior trans relative to the Muncie. The clutch teeth wear over time preventing the synchro unit to hold the gear in place. It pops out more easily on deceleration

In all likelihood that will not happen. The reason syn fluid is not recommended is that its lubricity doesn't allow the brass synchro ring to act as a proper cone clutch when engaging a gear upon shifting. You need a certain amount of friction for engagement to take place. What you will experience, though, is grinding when you attempt to shift from gear to gear. Using syn fluid will actually mimic a bad brass synchro ring.

I have Royal Purple full Syn in my Muncie. Initially I was unsure due to the same synchro reasons stated above by Dan. My trans is older but works very well but I had to replace the front brg recently. Because it's an older trans I explored splurging on the synthetic lube to be nice to it when refilling after the service. I spoke to an oline expert with a very good reputation who assured me that it would be fine. So in it went and all is well for MANY miles this summer. Just sayin'. May not be the best for everyone.

The right fluid does make a difference it seems.

In my VERY early '63 Muncie I would get an occasional grind when downshifting into second. As part of the side cover leak fix I refilled the tranny with Amsoil GL-4 lube and haven't heard that clash since.
