Default Did You See The Newspaper....

For those going to Bloomington Gold in Champaign this weekend, here's what was on the front page of the local paper this Tuesday morning...

The picture is of a truck carrying 4 Corvettes to the show that got stuck under a low overpass in town about a mile from the show site. Paper said one of the cars was damaged. The show related article below the picture tells that city officials are planning on over 100 volunteers to help park the cars downtown after the Gold Tour Saturday night. They are trying very hard to make the event successful. Now if they could only raise those pesky low overpasses.....

That's crazy. I guess the driver can't read. It says 11' 10" big as life.

I can't even tell you how angry I'd be if it was my car that was damaged inside. Driver should never had attempted that, much less be going at it fast enough to have peeled the trailer back so far.

Do you think this rig is less than 11'10" on flat ground?
Look at the angle.
The road appears higher at the rear trailer wheels.???
Still doesn't help the Corvettes inside!!

Yes it does. How much is the actual distance from the road bed to the lowest part of the bridge? (sometimes the signs are wrong)

Well I have an inquiring mind so I called the city about this issue after I posted that picture. First thing they said is that's a "state route" so the city has no jurisdiction over the posted height or how that height is arrived at. That said, the height posted on the overpass is the shortest distance from the roadway directly up to the overpass, in this case 11'10" but the "effective height" of that overpass over 65' (the max length of a normal tractor-trailer combination) is much less than 11'10" due to the steep angle of the roadway as GC2X4 points out. So in this case the poor truck driver was sucker into thinking he had much more clearance they he really did. City officials have been trying for years to get the state to at least set up a warning system for that overpass to no avail and the state won't let the city do it. It's not a high enough priority for the state to do anything about it. Note the headline: "Another Truck Gets Stuck". Meanwhile we have a beautiful Corvette getting damaged with the state shrugging its shoulders and dumping all the responsibly on the driver. Hey, the world isn't a perfect place as if we didn't already know that.

That's Ed Foss's rig - it's 13' 6" tall.

that story reminded me of this bridge, maybe it's the same one?

Remind me never to transport my cars in the front of the truck!

Remember the name of the carrier, (if they contract out) you won't want him carrying your car in the future.

When I was selling my 69 442 4sp vert, a well known transporter showed up at my house for the car. He inspected the car for 1 hr and wrote down at least 50 marks/inperfections on the car (49 which I did not see and did not exist) The car was a 9.5 out of 10 , mint and had one dent in the rear bumper on a flawless body. I wonder if all those flawless corvettes had similar write-ups in an attempt to limit liability.

He's not a transporter - he's a collector who owns his own rig, and those are his cars. He has LOTS of original unrestored Corvettes with little more than delivery mileage on them - "time capsules".

That one is in Durham, NC... it has a website you can watch live as so many trucks get stuck there...

That was not even close, truck was WAY over the posted height. I'd believe the 13'6" stated above. While it's sad to see someone's misfortune, at least the guy apparently damaged his own cars and not someone else's.
