first oil change

first oil change
I've had my 65 about a year now and put on a little over 1K miles on it. I'm ready to do an oil change. It has 64K miles on it and is a 300HP with A/C. I've seen some of the Forum posts about what different members are using. Has anyone used Royal Purple oil? They have a regular type that seems to have the right additives and handles heat pretty well. They also have HPS (High Performance Synthetic) which is a synthetic plus zinc. My friend says I should use Mobil 1 and add a zinc additive.I plan on using 10W40. Is it a good idea to use synthetic on this older engine that has been run on regular oil all these years? Should I stick with conventional Royal Purple and add the Zinc. Any help would be great. Thanks

Save your money and simply buy a CI-4 or CJ-4 rated Diesel oil. Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo or even Walmart brand, it doesn't matter. You won't have to add anything to it and your engine will be just fine and you'll save several $$$ per qt. Trust me and the million others that don't buy into the additive B.S.

If you only drive it a 1k miles a year you could run the Walmart no name brand in it and be okay... No need to spend $80 on oil if you are going to leave it sitting in the garage....

The price of premium oil recommended for that engine in 1964 was about $.35/quart. Adjusted for inflation that $.35 comes to $2.56/qt.
$16 should cover an oil/filter change. Why pay more?

I currently run 15W-40 CI/CJ oil and a NAPA Gold #1143 oil filter (made by WIX). Excellent oil filter to replace the AC PF-141. No problems or issues. As others have said, don't overdo this.
I WOULD NOT run a full synthetic oil in these old cars. There is no need. The REGULAR type oil of today (with the right zinc additives) is far superior to anything this car ever used in it's heyday.
I personally believe that Mobil 1 oil is overhyped and overrated. It is also not the true "synthetic oil" that it was when it was first introduced into the market. Things have changed. But name recognition is high because of sales/marketing/advertising.

X2 powershift
imo most any oils today will do. However the guy that spends 10k + on a motor then broods over the cost of putting decent oil in it to protect that makes me chuckle sometimes. Like putting in a big cam then sticking a 2.73 gear in it for "mileage" then complains about it being a turd.
Oh well.

Never mind the $80 oil change (which I've never heard of ). I'd wait another year or two before I changed the oil in that engine @ 1000m/year unless the OP is going to be starting the engine in the winter every week, just to warm it up.

while i certainly wouldn't spend that kind of $$ on an oill change that i can do myself, $80 or more is in the ballpark for what you would pay for a synthetic oil change at a dealer....
Bill
ps: remember the $72 i paid to have 1-1/2 bottles of posi additive added during my trip....

That's what I was really interested in but now I want to know how/why you would spend $15 for a filter in addition to the choice of using synthetic oil?
On the other hand, 10W-30 oil is available at your nearest Rural King Farm/Home store (and other places). $2.29/quart all day long. About $3 for an oil filter. $14.50 plus tax.
Hey Mikey. I'm going to the Cub Cadet forum next. Want to chase me over there?
