64 speedo repair
I am not sure if this is the correct area to post, but I have a 64 Vette and the speedo needs repair. The speedo more or less works, but the needle bounces a lot and the indicated speeds are way too low.
Does anyone know of a reliable place that can repair/re-calibrate the speedo? I would prefer Cleveland area, but I would be willing to ship it almost anywhere if the shop is well recommended.
Thanks

If its stock, try replacing the inner cable first...could be getting ready to break...

Surely the Cleveland area has a speedo repair shop. If that's where the problem lies, take it to one of them. There's NOTHING special about a Corvette speedo that requires it to be sent out for repair. A local repair not only saves you on shipping and the possibility of being damaged/lost, you'll get it back in a day or two.

I’m not so sure your local speedometer shop (if one still exists) is going to be able to fix a C2 speedometer, especially if you need parts (gears, odometer, etc.) or refacing. To calibrate the speedo, the shop will need gauzing equipment.
There are plenty of shops around the country that specialize in C2 gauge work. Not in Cleveland, but I would recommend Corvette Specialties of MD (West). They did an excellent job on my tach and speedo including refacing, new gears, new odometer and calibration.
Bouncing indicates something is binding – cable, gear, or odometer. Inaccurate readings indicated magnet re-gauzing is required.
Do a search and you will see the many shops recommended. Then call around and get estimates on the symptoms you’re experiencing.

It is a brand new cable. I installed a Tremec 5 speed ( well worth the money by the way), and the cable and gear came with it.
The tech guy from Tremec used to do speedo calibrations and said that this speedo works with magnets. He said that the bounce and variations in displayed speed are cause by weak magnets.
Believe it or not, there are no shops in the Cleveland area that will work on this speedo, ( that I could find) I checked before I posted.
Thanks for the tip on the out of state shop, I will give the, a call.
I tried an Internet search and came up empty. I must be using the wrong parameters....

As told to me by the local speedo repair shop, "Corvette speedos are no different than any of the other 100+ million GM products of the same era and we all get our repair parts from the same place". I've had several C-1, C-2 & C-3 gauges fixed locally without a problem. No need to ship them anywhere.
