Default speedometer works, odometer just stopped working..where to start

My 1964 coupe was doing fine. The speedometer was reading fine and the odometer rolled. Now, on my latest short ride, the speedometer is still working but the odometer stopped.

Any ideas why? Where do I start?

I thought the two had to be linked somehow. I didn't think one would work without the other.

Any help is appreciated. I want to keep things honestly represented on the car. It's a low mileage numbers matching and want to retain that integrity.

AZ.

That's a classic/chronic/common midyear failure mode; the odometer is driven by a series of three worm gears, and they fail/strip/wear out about every 60K miles, while the speedometer continues to work fine. The instrument cluster has to come out and an instrument specialist needs to replace the failed gears in the speedo head.

Wow John. I wanted an answer and I wanted it fast. I just didn't want THAT answer. Do you have another? Gee, I read a post called the C2 Money Pit. I can't seem to get to MY desired projects when things like this happen. Oh well...it is what it is. This needs to be addressed before anymore driving. Gee, and I was just on a cloud having installed Pertronix Friday night, went for a moonlit ride and now this.

Thanks John............I DO appreciate the information. Now the search for a good repair place begins..............

C2 Money Pit..............it's beginning to happen.................

My 67 does this too. Odometer stopped but speedo worked fine. Now, the speedo has to warm up. It doesn't work when starting out, as it warms up, it starts to bounce a lot. Then, finally when warmed up, it mostly works. I hope that the speedo problem isn't a specialist thing too.
