Default 3858174 block
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guys,
I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this by I need to start somewhere.
I bought a 73 Camaro many years ago off of my best friend (car was built and sold in Canada). The car had a 327 in it at the time.
I did some checking and the following info was what I was able to get off the engine;
1) Casting on the rear flange: 3858174
2) Date located on the rear flange: D186
3) Front pad (alt): F0421HT
3) Front pad (alt): 6120397
Engine is over 30 at the moment and in perfect condition. Original intake and carb are long gone. I still do have the oil canister but the engine currently has an adapter in place.
I also have double humps that are not matching for the block (3782461: C125, C135).
My question is what would be the best way to go about trying to find the individual who "May" own the car this block belongs to? I know it is a long shot but the engine does no good sitting in a Camaro. Aside from that I want to upgrade and not take the chance of damaging an engine which could be of great importance to the guy who may have the car it goes in.
Any help advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Patrick

I posted in another thread (http:
//www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c1-and-c2-corvettes/3717491-c2-upgrade-questions.html) the saga of my friend's 64. The engine that was in the car when he got it is not the original engine but it does appear to be from a 1966 Corvette. Maybe someone here might recognize their VIN? It's been known to happen.
VIN - 127498. The stamp is actually 6127498. As I said in my other thread, I'm a Camaro guy, not a Corvette guy. Normally there would be a letter designating the final assembly plant followed by the last six digits of the VIN. I know Corvettes played by their own rules, but even Colvin's references indicate this should be a letter.
Block #3858174 introduced March 1966. Colvin notes, "This could be considered a mystery block. Chevrolet documentation shows this block being used as early as the 1964 model year in 300+ horsepower applications and commercial trucks. Verifiable usage of this model usage was not found until 1966. This block was used interchangeably with the #3858180 block in some applications."
Casting date E96 May 9, 1966
Suffix HE 1966 Corvette 327/300 Manual
Date F0707 Flint July 7, 1966
The block has been sleeved once before and has .030 pistons. Both head gaskets were blown and the engine was driven hot until it seized. I don't see any cracks, so it could be saved if it was worth it to someone - like anyone who might happen to have a 66 C2 with a VIN of 127498.
In 1976, while I was in high school, the 302 in my Z/28 spun a rod bearing and I traded the motor and some cash for a 350. When I was restoring the car in the mid nineties I really regretted that and I was hoping to find another DZ 302 to put in there. A friend of mine came back from a swap meet and told me he ran across a 302 short block for $600, so he bought it figuring I'd want it. I said hell yes! I went and looked at it and it was my original engine, still with the same spun bearing from 20 years before.
