Default HELP, C1 2x4 recommendations

Presently collecting parts for my 58 restoration. Got to start restoring soon as I'm running out of time (now 68) on the actual frame-off restoration,

Don't care about being original plan is to use a 327 with a hydrolic cam equaliant to an old 3/4 race came. Raise the compression just enough to require ethyl gas and have a 2x4 carb set up.

Have started the carb set up by purchase of a GM 3739653 alum intake manifold. Now starting to look at carburetors. Have seen several posts that there are a lot better carb than the old WCFB which makes sense due to there age. Attracted to Holleys, is the 4160 a good fit? If so which choke setting, etc. Want to make sure I have no interference problem with hood, readily available linkage, fuel manifolds would be an advantage.

Would an Edelbrock be a better choice?

If you're not worried about originality, the entire Edelbrock 2x4 setup would be the way to go.. MUCH better intake and carbs overall. You can drop them on and forget them.

You have no choice with the factory 653 manifold - it ONLY accepts WCFB carburetors. If you want to use other carbs, you'll have to use an aftermarket intake and measure carefully for hood clearance.

I am using an Offenhauser 2x4, and love it. They will only work with AFBs (Carter / Edelbrock) and the carb bases are spread futher apart than the Edelbrock manifold, which centers the carbs over the intake ports better. And no large cap HEI (note how close the rear carb is to the standard dist. in the below picture).

Mr. Gasket does make an adapter to mate a AFB to the WCFB carb base if your set on using the 653 manifold. Don't know if it will work with the 2x4 setup though.

Nice set up John,

Any problem with hood clearance? Where did you get the air cleaner and what kind of carbs are those?

The hood clearance is minimal but never have had contact - 1/4" or so, especially since I added 5/16" insulator gaskets.

Air cleaner is a modified single 4 bbl carb unit (availabe just about everwhere, including Summit) that I modified the base to fit the dual AFBs, and uses a K&N filter. I sometimes change the air cleaner out to a pair of old style small round chrome type units (just to look old school).

Carbs are 500 cfm Carter AFBs. But they are odd with the fuel inlets on the throttle side.........

Thanks,
John

Or a vintage Weiand setup for dual AFB's. I was gifted one a few years ago but "re-gifted" it.

Here's a few on ebay.....

Once upon a time, waaaaaaaaaay back when, someone made an adapter which had the holes offset just a little to one side. This permitted installing two AFB carbs on the original GM 653 manifold instead of the WCFBs.

Sorry, I don't have a picture of the 2 AFB carbs installed on the 653 manifold, but the two adapter plates slightly moves the rear carb to the rear and the front carb slightly toward the front which opens up just a small gap to permit the installation of the two AFBs.

Really like your set up, could you post a picture on how you modified the air cleaner base plate to fit the 2x4's.

Tks.
