Default Speedo cable removal

This may be a stupid question but I need to replace the plastic gear that drives the speedo cable in the transmission. . If I remove this will the transmission fluid drain out?

You should be ok. On most GM-used manual transmissions (Warner T-10, Saginaw 3-speed and Muncie) the speedo drive gear is above the static fluid level. Just let it sit for a few hours and not much will come out, if any.
