Default AC Delco Battery or other?

I'm trying to buy a AC Delco Battery so that I can put a fake tar top unit on top. Seems like I've called and went on line and no one can find a battery for my 63'. Can anyone help with this? A battery number would be appreciated. Also, if someone knows of a different battery that could be used, I'll take that number also.

Thank you for the group 24 info. I called 2 places in NM and both have the group 24 battery but they have the 2 caps on top. I need a flat top with no caps. Do you happen to know the battery number itself?

I feel your pain......went through the same thing, and apparently Delco no longer makes a 24 series battery with a flat top. Nappa still makes one, and I think Sears does also. I put a 31 series battery in my car, with a fake top. The 31 has the same cranking amps as a 24 it's just one inch shorter than a 24 series. Makes it a little easier for this old man to get it in and out of the car.

Thank you for the info. What battery brand is the 31 series?

Batteries plus. Just had an AC delco battery fail after two years and barely any use...probably 400 miles total. No issues with Alternator or voltage regulator, a cell just went bad for no reason.

Sorry about your battery. I've never had a delco battery before and I only want to get a battery so that I can put on the tar top. I'm not to interested in quality...sometimes the cheaper battery last longer than the better ones. Most of the batteries are made by Johnson controls with different brand names...weird. Best of luck with your problem.

All the major battery producers have 24 and 31 series batteries, plus many other size's. Napa makes a quality 31 series battery. If you don't drive your vette a lot......keep a battery tender on it, and it will probably last a least 5 years.

My point was that batteries plus has what you need and i recommend avoiding the ac delco brand, even though they apparently do not produce what you are looking for any longer.

I'm going on 10 years with my ACDelco for my 63 and only started using the Deltran tender for the last two...guess I'm pushing my luck and should replace soon.

By the way, it would be a good idea to take your fake tar top with you, and make sure it fits the battery. I seem to remember from a previous thread that some batteries have a carrying strap across the top. The strap themselves are not a problem because most are removable.......but the mounts that they attach to on each side of the battery might interfere with the tar top seating flush on top of the battery. Not a big deal, as the mounting tabs can easily be cut off.......although that alteration might affect the warranty.

My new truck went through 4 Delco batteries in the 3 years it was under warranty. The Delco distributor told me that most of them are made overseas and they don't use pure lead, they use an alloy and that's why they don't last very long. Went to an Exide battery and have had no problems since.

Delco ACD24-60 maintenance-free flat top battery. Around $75 at your Delco dealer. Working fine in my car after several years, no trickle charger.

Default Delco flat top

I buy mine at the local Chevy dealer - just got one about 2 months ago.

I just got a Optima RedTop Sealed battery Group Size 25 for my '66. Pep Boys online. Free shipping and 20% off. Just barely fits the battery hold down but with the fake tar topper it fits fine. Maintanance free is the way to go.

+1 on Optima, although they've doubled in price since I bought my last one TEN years ago and still working great.

But doesn't the white "six-pack" hanging below defeat the camouflage purpose of the tar top? Or do you spray it black?

The redtop I got (I believe code was RED25) has a red top (dah) and a red bottom spacer that snaps on to raise the battery a bit. ‘Six pack’ was a dark gray. Once the battery holder and tar topper camouflage is on a lot is hidden. You really have to look with a flashlight to see the battery. A flat black false side on the front and outboard side would hide it but I didn’t go that far since I'm only looking for something close to original for local car shows.

I should add that my setup on the '66 has Vintage A/C which has the battery on the passenger side and a lot of hoses going around the battery. Helps with the camouflage.

forgot to mention, price was $137 delivered to front door and I'll get back $15 core charge when I drop off the old battery. I thought it was a good deal based on the pricing I did.
