Default Help with engine ID

A friend has a small block Chevy engine, in garage forever, and on the pad it is stamped F03220. On the back of the block on top says C165. Can anyone help? Thanks!

There should be more on the stamp pad. Can you make anything else out. Also on the opposite side of where you got the date is the casting number. Post that too. But C165 is March 16 1965

You need to recheck the stamp pad. F0320 plus two letters like HT, is possible. That would be Mar 20 and a 350hp if it was a Corvette engine. The C165 should be March 16, 1965 but the stamp pad needs more digits.

I can give you some of the help you need.
The assembly date/code F03220 breaks down as follows:
F = Flint
03 = March
22 = 22nd day of the month
0 = I do not have a break down for 0

The block casting date is C165 which breaks down as follows:
C = March
16 = 16th day of month
5 = 1965

What is the block casting number? That might give additional help.

The block casting number is 3849852. We were hoping it was a 283 made around 58, apparently not. We still don't if it is a 283 or 327.

Thanks for any help.

Yup, made in 1965. That block was in production from '58 thru '67. I don't show any "O" suffix either. Got a photo of the stamp pad?

If my information is correct, 1964 was the last year that Chevrolet used a single character engine suffix code. Suffix codes from then on were either 2 or 3 characters.
