Remove Steering Colum on '62.
Hello Guys,
I'm getting close to removing the body off the frame on my '62.
I have looked up previous posts, but have yet been able to figure how to remove the entire steering column from the car.
Do I have to remove the entire box, and pull it down through the bottom, or do I leave it on and slide the body up and over the column?
Thanks in advance!
Pat

Pat,
When I pulled the column and box out of my '60, I did the following:
1. Unbolt the hood support and swing the hood straight vertical.
2. Remove left exhaust manifold
3. Remove all the obvious things inside the passenger compartment
Then I lifted the box up, forward and to the left out over the driver's side fender.
That said, I'm pretty sure the box could be unbolted from the frame and left attached to the body when you remove it.
Good luck,
Jim

several ways
ubolt from frame and lift with body
or
remove from body by unbolting box, removing steering wheel, dropping column down from dash, tip box end of column up and pull out through hood opening
i would suggest the first way

Haven't done a "one piece" steering column on a C1 yet but have done a few on early Mustangs. Be SURE to be careful you don't punch a hole in the driver's seat vinyl with the steering shaft while maneuvering that steering box around in the engine compartment.
My advice would be to remove the seat which you've probably already done if you are in the throes of a "body off" restoration !!

And note that if the box still has liquid lube in it (the original style lube), it can run out the steering wheel end of the column if the box is raised higher than the wheel end.
There is NO SEAL stopping it.

I didn't pull the body off on mine but changed the front suspension body on. I tried to go out the bottom but ended up going through the top.

Thanks a lot guys!
I do already have the hood removed as well as the interior, so I just need to remove the drag link from the steering box, unbolt the box and take it out.
I knew you guy's would have the answer!
I'm heading to the garage now to complete the process.
Thanks,
Pat
