Default C2 valve cover debate

Morning Gents (and ladies),

I'm having a little discussion with a guy about valve covers on the lower HP cars for 63-67 years. I don't have access to the NCRS manual, so any C2 judges please chime in!

From everything I have read about, all 250-300hp cars should have the stamped steel, orange painted non-script valve covers with the early 63s having the small "filets" on the rectangular decal relief edges and the later 63s and all 64 and later years having the larger triangular "filets". Is this correct for all the C2s? Were there any other type of stamped steel valve covers used on the low HP 327s during any C2 year?

The debate comes when he says there is a 96% 1967 car, low HP, that has script stamped steel valve covers with the straight bolt holes. I know the 265-283 motors had the stamped steel script Chevrolet, staggered bolt holed valve covers but thought with the 327s in the C2 Vettes you either got finned Aluminum covers or the aforementioned stamped steel with the rectangular relief for the horsepower decal. Were things changed for 1967?

I have a 300hp 1964 and he was telling me initially that I had the wrong covers. I've since proved I do have the right ones (stamped steel, larger filets) and now he throws this little tidbit into the mix and I don't think it's a correct statement. I'm only really interested in my year specifics, but was intrigued when he said the 67 had different covers than the previous C2s. I'd like to back up my disbelief with some facts but again, I do not have the manual right now to search it out. Thanks for the reply guys. I enjoy debate on trivial stuff like this, but like to see facts to back up a claim if what is right and what is wrong

Cheers

You are both right.... mostly.

You are right about the valve covers used from '63 through '66.

Your buddy is right about the valve covers used in '67.

The script valve covers used in '67 were similar (but only similar) to the 265/283 valve covers you are thinking about. The difference is that the ends of the '67 valve covers are slightly slanted whereas the 265/283 script valve covers had ends which were straight up and down.
(And, of course, the 265/283 covers were made with straight and staggered hole patterns.)

Is there any way to differentiate the stamped steel valve covers that were used on the Corvette from the ones used on other small blocks of the period?

I have a set of the stamped ones with the fillet (and I don't know how to differentiate small fillet from large fillet), and wasn't sure if they had any commercial value.

No. The same cover was used on both passenger car and Corvette.

I am suitably envious.

I've made a New Year's resolution to make at least one trip to T'hill this year. My arthritis is well enough controlled now that I think I could do this again. I've got to find out.....

Do you know where this 3 speed car came from. I had a red 300/3speed car back in 1979-1981. It had a radio and that was it for options. I bought it from a guy who lived at the beach (Virginia Beach) and the red paint was pink. I repainted the car. I paid $2800 for it.

For those that don't know what the "flats" means...its usually called the "large" and "small" rectangle versions!
The bottom is early '63 250/300hp and the top is late '63 and '64 - same engine options.

Here's a '67 300hp with the script covers, about a 15* angle from vertical at each end.

Mine was a roadster. Thanks for the reply. I have kicked myself for 32 years for letting it go.
