Default Quck help please, assembling Muncie

Just replacing the front bearing on my 21. I see that there is a thrust washer behind the bearing between the bearing and the input shaft gear. I do not see this washer on any exploded views or parts lists. Is it supposed be there? Thanks for any input.

You will need to leave it. If you remove it I would guess you will end up with the input gear touching the case or too much slack in the mainshaft. Are you sure you don't need to completely go through the trans if you are this far in? Bearing at the mid plate is probably rough if the input bearing is. New brass and seals throughout is always a good idea.

The washer is a oil slinger as there is no oil seal in input shaft you may have a oil leak if it is not fitted.

Here's a photo of that input shaft oil slinger.

The oil slinger on a Muncie is the nut that holds the bearing to the input shaft. What you have pictured adjusts the clearance between the input gear and the main shaft.

Thanks all. I have been googling today about this and lo and behold I discovered a post from some years ago by our DZTom in another forum. Essentially [as JohnZ pictured] the slinger/spacer is up against the input gear as shown - looks like mine may have looked like that before [not now]. This part is not shown in most exploded views that I have found. As Tom stated in that reply, early trans's did not have it. The OEM # is 3925692/3925762 both of which are NLA. The front LH Thread nut is called, yes, wait for it, a "Gland" nut. It also works in conjunction with the LH Threads as an oil slinger. I need to find a supplier of said slinger/spacer and am having a bit of trouble at this time.

Here are the clearance spacers for the main drive gear - they're different than the oil slinger.

Thank you John. I now see that I need both. Most exploded views that I have looked at show neither. Do have OEM part#s for these, or at least the spacer.
Thanks,
Frank.

Just to continue floggong this horse ... Why in both of these excellent exploded views, do not show the shim but do show the slinger, which in some opinions are optional?
http://www.autogear.net/pdf/munciecat.pdf Item # B2-2 - part that looks like JohnZ's 1st pic. of slinger which I'm understanding is old style.

http://www.5speeds.com/mpower/MuncieCat.pdf Item # B3 - part that I have seen as a change up slinger.

JohnZ's 2nd pic shows both with shim and the later style slinger.

Gads....

Thanks,

Here's an NOS M21 input gear I bought off FleaBay about 8 years ago. I believe the slinger is part of the package, as the Rev 10-1-69 P&A30B parts catalog Gr 4.351 describes # 3925690 as '63-69 Corvette (26 teeth) w/slinger $40.05

Notice the slight scallop on the circumferential edge. Maybe this is to line up with something ? No mention of spacer rings; I'll have to dig into my Petersen's "Basic transmissions" book [1971].

somebody must be reproducing these slingers, as I've seen them popping up on eBay in the past month.

Thanks midstyle, I'm sure the slingers are avail in the after market. The one on your shaft is the newer style[?]. And it seems like I'll need a spacer too, so I will place an order tomorrow now knowing what I am talking about [I think]. And wait ... pah ...
Thanks all, Frank.
