Default A/C belt in 1966 sb

I am in the process of returning the factory air to my 66 convertible. Neither the A/C compressor nor the dust shields over the upper control arms were on the car til recently. My A/C belt is sawing its way through the dust shield. Is this a know issue or do I have things put together wrong? The dust shields get stapled at a rather exact spot so I don't see how I could have messed that up. the compressor seems rather set in its location as well. Does anyone have any pics of the clearance I should have between the A/C belt and the dust shields?

You have a problem. Suggest getting a copy of the 1966 AIM and a Chevrolet Parts Manual and checking belt length and pulley identification. I have a parts manual and can help if needed.

The biggest issue I have seen on the 327/350 HP air cars is for the AC belt to rub through the lower radiator hose if everything is not set properly. This has (almost) happened to me.

A shorter belt might solve the problem, since the compressor pulley will rotate up and inboard.

This isn't your ZZ4 motor is it?

Yes it is the zz4. I am using A/C brackets that I suspect were cast in China. I thought you could get the correct style brackets to pretty much bolt up to the correctly positioned holes in the zz4 block? does a zz4 cause problems?

Do you have the right diameter compressor pulley? There are two versions out there...

Nope. The only holes in the block that affect the compressor mounting are the RH side water pump bolt holes, and they're the same on every small-block ever made.

Assume you are using a stock-style exh manifold?

If so, with the correct brackets, there should not be a clearance issue.
My '65 A/C small block has 1.25" of belt clearance to the dust flap.
That's with a Dayco Top Cog 15575 belt.

If you need to get some original compressor bracketry--let me know. I've collected a pile of extras. (why? heck I don't know...)
